Olivia Giarrizzo clarified in an emailed statement to Marine Corps Times Thursday afternoon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her statement came after apparently inaccurate reports of an active shooter at the North Carolina base circulated on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/10\/19\/marine-arrested-for-suspected-involvement-in-death-of-another-marine\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ap17012785900845.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Marine arrested for suspected involvement in death of another Marine<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">\u201cThe incident occurred in an on-base barracks room earlier this evening,\u201d a late Wednesday night news release from the installation stated.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Giarrizzo also said the dead Marine had been part of the infantry unit 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, which is part of the Camp Lejeune-based 2nd Marine Division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a matter of policy, the Defense Department typically waits to release the name of a deceased service member until 24 hours after notifying the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur deepest condolences go out to the Marine\u2019s family and friends at this time,\u201d Giarrizzo said in the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine suspected of involvement in the death was arrested at approximately 10:15 p.m. Wednesday in connection with an incident that occurred in an on-base barracks room earlier that evening, according to a Marine Corps news release late that night. The Corps hasn\u2019t released that Marine\u2019s identity, either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating what happened, and 2nd Marine Division will assist investigators as much as possible, Giarrizzo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2021, a Marine at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina from 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/04\/16\/barracks-shooting-sends-a-camp-lejeune-marine-to-hospital\/\">was hospitalized<\/a> after getting shot in the barracks but recovered. NCIS said days later the Marine likely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/04\/20\/2-marines-involved-in-likely-accidental-barracks-shooting-ncis-says\/\">had been shot by accident<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The base is scheduled to hold an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lejeune.marines.mil\/News\/Article\/Article\/3561187\/camp-lejeune-to-conduct-annual-emergency-response-exercise-oct-20-28\/\">annual emergency response exercise<\/a> starting Friday that \u201cprovides realistic training opportunities meant to increase the installation\u2019s emergency response efforts, command and control, and security capabilities,\u201d according to a
