David Berger is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/10\/12\/tell-us-is-your-marine-corps-unit-having-a-birthday-ball\/\" target=\"_blank\">canceling<\/a> his Marine Corps birthday ball in the nation\u2019s capital, a Marine Corps spokesman confirmed Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a move echoed across the Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/10\/12\/marine-corps-to-limit-travel-for-upcoming-birthday-ball\/\" target=\"_blank\">second<\/a> consecutive year, the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/10\/12\/tell-us-is-your-marine-corps-unit-having-a-birthday-ball\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Corps birthday celebrations<\/a>, generally held on or around the Corps\u2019 birthday on Nov. 10. In 2020 most units in the Marine Corps had to adjust birthday celebrations, limit travel plans or outright cancel them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMany commanders\u201d around the Marine Corps have decided to \u201cforego\u201d in-person celebrations of the Marine Corps birthday, Headquarters Marine Corps Spokesman Capt. Ryan Bruce told Marine Corps Times in an email.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/10\/12\/tell-us-is-your-marine-corps-unit-having-a-birthday-ball\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6417505-1.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Tell us: Is your Marine Corps unit having a birthday ball?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">How do you feel about it? Veterans, how are you celebrating?<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cApproval authority for gatherings of greater than 50 individuals resides with each OSD Component head and may be delegated no lower than to his or her Principal Deputy,\u201d Bruce wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means Marine Corps birthday ball celebrations would need to be approved in advance by either the secretary or undersecretary of the Navy, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the commandant is canceling his ball, it is still unclear if in-person celebrations will occur at other installations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Training and Education Command spokesman told Marine Corps Times that its ball is also canceled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marine Corps representatives from Camp Pendleton, California, and Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, have yet to comment on the status of balls aboard those respective installations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Retired Marine Corps Maj. Paul Zacharzuk told Marine Corps Times in an email that he was planning to attend a birthday celebration aboard Camp Pendleton, California. But the celebration \u2014 which would have been his first since his 2013 retirement \u2014 was canceled in early October. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNeither my friend or I understand the reason why with all the events taking place now both indoors and outdoors,\u201d Zacharzuk wrote. \u201cIt\u2019s really disappointing to hear that units are being directed to cancel their Birthday Balls.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the Marine Corps 13th Commandant Gen.
