But it appears changes, if any, aren\u2019t coming soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/12\/03\/marine-style-barbecue-marines-add-foraging-class-to-the-basic-school\/\" target=\"_blank\">Se<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/12\/03\/marine-style-barbecue-marines-add-foraging-class-to-the-basic-school\/\" target=\"_blank\">cond lieutenants at Quantico, Virginia\u2019s The Basic School,<\/a> the training course for new Marine officers, get divided into thirds based on performance in the six-month course, as has been policy for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those in the top of each third get first pick at receiving their preferred military occupational specialties, Brig. Gen. Farrell Sullivan explained at the Modern Day Marine conference Tuesday in Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Civilian or prior-enlisted experience and individual suitability also come into play, according to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.trngcmd.marines.mil\/Portals\/207\/Docs\/TBS\/new%20material\/Marine%20Officer%20MOS%20Assignment%20Handbook%202019%20(HIGH%20RES).pdf\" target=\"_blank\"> Marine handbook on military occupational specialties<\/a> for officers. Inside the Corps&#039; new training blueprint.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/education-transition\/2023\/03\/14\/heres-whats-in-the-corps-new-training-and-education-plan\/\">Training and Education 2030<\/a> planning document, released in January, tasked Training Command leaders with analyzing whether the policy based on thirds makes sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat evidence or analysis supports the continuation of the quality spread model for MOS selection used at TBS?\u201d the document reads. \u201cAre we discouraging achievement and performance by giving preference to Marines in the top of the bottom third of the class over Marines in the bottom of the top third?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sullivan said Tuesday, \u201cI\u2019m not sure what an alternate process would be that would be more effective than what we\u2019ve done up to this point. But we\u2019re looking at that, because we were tasked to look at that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before 1977, new officers were allocated jobs based solely on lineal standing at The Basic School. The switch to the thirds system was meant to ensure that each occupational field \u201creceived a fair share of the most competitive lieutenants,\u201d according to the handbook on job allocations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These days, although nearly 95% of Marine officers receive one of their top five choices, only approximately 44% receive their first choice, according to the handbook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.dtic.mil\/sti\/trecms\/pdf\/AD1150393.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Maj. John Bailey\u2019s 2021 master\u2019s thesis<\/a> for the Naval Postgraduate School found a \u201cmodest, but positive, statistically significant relationship\u201d between job preference received and performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bailey suggested The Basic School follow the lead of the U.S. Military Academy, which assigns Army officers to jobs more holistically, incorporating the desires of the occupational fields\u2019 leadership and the officers\u2019 specific skills.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>But it appears changes, if any,
