{"id":32870,"date":"2024-04-24T00:00:54","date_gmt":"2024-04-24T00:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2024\/04\/24\/the-man-who-made-belleau-wood-and-the-marine-corps-immortal\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T21:09:03","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T21:09:03","slug":"the-man-who-made-belleau-wood-and-the-marine-corps-immortal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2024\/04\/24\/the-man-who-made-belleau-wood-and-the-marine-corps-immortal\/","title":{"rendered":"The man who made Belleau Wood \u2014 and the Marine Corps \u2014 immortal"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am up at the front and entering Belleau Wood with the U.S. Marines.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And with that final dispatch, war correspondent Floyd Gibbons \u2014 armed with nothing but his pen and paper \u2014 strolled into a melee of artillery and machine gun fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This dispatch would later help to shape the ethos of the United States Marine Corps and more than a century on, define the public\u2019s view of the \u201cDevil Dogs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A seasoned reporter for the Chicago Tribune, the charismatic Gibbons had reported on the Pancho Villa expedition in 1916 and the sinking of the RMS Laconia<i> <\/i>in 1917 before accepting his latest assignment as one of only 36 American reporters officially accredited in World War I.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a noncombatant, Gibbons ignored the request that he stay back and joined a Marine attack on June 6, 1918, through the waist-high wheat toward the woods some several hundred yards away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By early June \u201cmore than 2,000 German soldiers with at least 30 machine guns had ensconced themselves in Belleau Wood, and another 100 Germans with at least six machine guns held Bouresches,\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/warontherocks.com\/2018\/06\/the-importance-of-the-battle-of-belleau-wood\/\" target=\"_blank\"> recalled historian David John Ulbrich<\/a>. All awaited the Marines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the Marines advanced, the enemy fire \u201cwas more than flesh and blood could stand,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.navy.mil\/our-collections\/photography\/us-people\/c\/catlin-albertus-w.html\" target=\"_blank\">Col. Albertus W. Catlin<\/a> wrote in his memoir \u201cWith the Help of God and a Few Marines<i>.\u201d <\/i>Catlin was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1914 for action in Vera Cruz and led the Sixth Regiment at Belleau Wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With no defense Gibbons was eventually cut down \u2014 bullets striking his left arm, left shoulder blade and left eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Made to lie in the field for three hours until the safety of darkness, Gibbons wondered if he was dead. With his left hand and arm numb and his left eyeball split in half and lying on his cheek, Gibbons used his right hand to pinch himself for reassurance. He was indeed still alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The news censor, however, incorrectly believing Gibbons to be dead, \u201cconcluded that it would be a crime to cut the last dispatch of Gibbons\u2019s life, so he decided to let it go through as written,\u201d according to an account in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/gory-glorious-details-on-the-life-of-the-ultimate-war-correspondent\/2017\/03\/17\/3760386a-08de-11e7-bd19-fd3afa0f7e2a_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When he sent his final dispatch, Gibbons had expected the word \u201cMarines\u201d to be omitted. Up until that point no correspondent was permitted to name which troops were on which fronts due to wartime censorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause the censor let Gibbons\u2019s dispatch go through, all correspondents were given the same privilege,\u201d the Post continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For three days, reports of Marines in action at Belleau Wood went uncensored, and the American public, hungry for news of the war, were regaled with stories of the Devil Dogs as they fought in close-quarters combat with fixed bayonets, and, \u201cworst of all,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=BYI4AAAAQBAJ&#038;pg=PT83&#038;lpg=PT83&#038;dq=for+all+intents+and+purposes,+the+old+warriors+of+the+U.S.+Marine+Corps+were+virtually+wiped+out&#038;source=bl&#038;ots=v-dTSfeQvG&#038;sig=ACfU3U2KqXWrID3Tv2zcAJD9UHKvRdhbiw&#038;hl=en&#038;sa=X&#038;ved=2ahUKEwjXvdvH1truAhXMKs0KHSzMAD0Q6AEwAnoECAcQAg#v=onepage&#038;q=for%20all%20intents%20and%20purposes%2C%20the%20old%20warriors%20of%20the%20U.S.%20Marine%20Corps%20were%20virtually%20wiped%20out&#038;f=false\">historian George B. Clark<\/a> noted, \u201cmachine guns at point-blank range.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor all intents and purposes, the old warriors of the U.S. Marine Corps were virtually wiped out,\u201d Clark wrote. The Marines suffered 4,000 casualties and 1,000 killed \u2014 a 55 percent attrition rate \u2014 losing more men in this single campaign than in all its previous existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dispatch from Gibbons, who would live another 21 years after the engagement, gave full credit to the 9,500-strong 4th Marine Brigade, altogether ignoring the U.S. Army\u2019s 2nd Division of the American Expeditionary Forces who fought alongside the Marines. Even before the conclusion of the battle on June 26th, thanks to Gibbons getting past the censor, the legend of the Marines at Belleau Wood emerged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remembered for their gritty, victorious stand some 105 years ago, Belleau Wood stands immortal in Marine Corps lore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe
