Tyler King said Dec. 18 in an emailed statement to Marine Corps Times. The problem occurred at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/09\/08\/japans-top-court-orders-okinawa-to-allow-marine-corps-to-build-runways\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Corps Air Station Futenma<\/a>, Okinawa, Japan, according to the Naval Safety Command\u2019s list of mishaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps is keeping the nature of the problem under wraps while it investigates what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe maintenance actions do not stem from a flight mishap or personnel injury but were in the normal conduct of preventative maintenance,\u201d King said, without specifying the number of helicopters involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/08\/09\/marine-helicopters-flex-on-1200-mile-maritime-trip\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6735451.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Marine Corps helicopters flex on 1,200-mile trip across Japan<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">It demonstrated the Corps\u2019 ability to move helicopters long distances across the Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Viper, which can fire at targets in the air and on the ground, and the Venom, which can perform a wide range of missions, are both Bell-made helicopters and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/Resources\/Fact-Files\/Display-FactFiles\/Article\/2160217\/ah-1z-viper-and-uh-1y-venom-helicopters\/\" target=\"_blank\">part of the same family of aircraft<\/a>, according to Naval Air Systems Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps had 159 Vipers and 128 Venoms in its inventory in 2022, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aviation.marines.mil\/Portals\/11\/Documents\/Aviation%20Plan\/2022%20Marine%20Aviation%20Plan%20FINAL%20April%202022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">the aviation planning document<\/a> released that year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">King declined in a follow-up email to clarify how the recent issue came about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt this time, with an open investigation I do not have any further information whether the issue arose from maintenance or was discovered by it,\u201d the spokesman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aircraft wing was \u201ctaking corrective actions to ensure our aircrew and aircraft are performing within the highest standards of safety and procedural compliance,\u201d King said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The maintenance issue didn\u2019t raise any \u201cimmediate\u201d concerns related to the safety of flight, according to the spokesman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, Naval Safety Command listed the incident as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/06\/09\/unlatched-parts-ingested-into-marine-f-35b-in-mishap-in-japan\/\" target=\"_blank\">a Class A mishap<\/a>, the most serious kind. In cases where no one was killed or permanently disabled, a Class A mishap indicates military aircraft sustained at least $2.5 million in damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">King\u2019s statement didn\u2019t specify the unit where the mishap took place, except that it took place under 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, the Corps\u2019 Pacific-based aviation element. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcasfutenma.marines.mil\/\" target=\"_blank\">The air station<\/a> where the incident occurred is home to Marine Aircraft Group 36, along with an air control group, according to its website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stmaw.marines.mil\/Subordinate-Units\/Marine-Aircraft-Group-36\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Aircraft Group 36<\/a> doesn\u2019t contain any light attack helicopter squadrons, the units that fly Vipers and Venoms, according to its website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
