{"id":33006,"date":"2024-03-21T17:57:40","date_gmt":"2024-03-21T17:57:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2024\/03\/21\/marine-corps-is-reviving-a-light-attack-helicopter-unit-it-cut-in-2022\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T21:08:17","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T21:08:17","slug":"marine-corps-is-reviving-a-light-attack-helicopter-unit-it-cut-in-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2024\/03\/21\/marine-corps-is-reviving-a-light-attack-helicopter-unit-it-cut-in-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Marine Corps is reviving a light attack helicopter unit it cut in 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In November 2022, Marines from a North Carolina helicopter squadron <a href=\"https:\/\/www.2ndmaw.marines.mil\/Photos\/igphoto\/2003112725\/\">flew their AH-1Z Vipers and UH-1Y Venoms<\/a> together for what was supposed to be the last time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Marine in one helicopter marked the occasion by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/video\/863725\/final-farewell-hmla-269-flies-last-flight-squadron\">making the \u201crock and roll\u201d hand gesture<\/a> as the aircraft neared the ground, according to video of the final flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next month, Marines from Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 269, known as the \u201cGunrunners,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/video\/867901\/sun-sets-gunrunners-hmla-269-deactivation-ceremony\">officially cased the unit\u2019s colors<\/a> in a ceremony aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But less than two years after the squadron was deactivated as part of an overhaul of the Marine Corps, it will get reactivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThrough the Force Design Campaign of Learning, the Service continually seeks validation of previous assumptions to ensure the [Fleet Marine Force] is effective, lethal, and combat-ready,\u201d Marine spokesman Maj. Eric Flanagan said in an emailed statement to Marine Corps Times on March 14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marine light attack helicopter squadrons, commonly known as HMLAs, would prove useful in crisis-response missions and maritime conflicts with peer adversaries alike, said Flanagan, who noted the \u201cpersistent demand\u201d for the squadrons\u2019 capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Viper, which can support troops on the ground by firing at targets in the air and on the ground, and the Venom, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/Resources\/Fact-Files\/Display-FactFiles\/Article\/2160217\/ah-1z-viper-and-uh-1y-venom-helicopters\/\">can perform a wide range of missions<\/a>, are both Bell-made helicopters and part of the same family of aircraft, according to Naval Air Systems Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 269 will get reactivated in July, according to Flanagan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The December 2022 deactivation took place as part of Force Design 2030, the Corps\u2019 plan for modernizing to meet the threat of technologically sophisticated adversaries like the Chinese military. As part of the plan, the service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/03\/22\/goodbye-tanks-how-the-marine-corps-will-change-and-what-it-will-lose-by-ditching-its-armor\/\" target=\"_blank\">has gotten rid of some units and assets<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2024\/03\/05\/marine-himars-battalion-to-fold-amid-overhaul-of-corps-artillery\/\" target=\"_blank\">to free up money<\/a> for other capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the initial 2020 document laying out Force Design 2030, then-Commandant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hqmc.marines.mil\/Portals\/142\/Docs\/CMC38%20Force%20Design%202030%20Report%20Phase%20I%20and%20II.pdf\">Gen. David Berger called for<\/a> the Marine Corps to cut at least two of its seven light attack helicopter squadrons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile this capability has a certain amount of relevance to crisis and contingency missions which we must still be prepared to execute, it is operationally unsuitable for our highest-priority maritime challenges and excess to our needs with the divestment of three infantry battalions,\u201d Berger wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deactivation of the squadron \u201cwas based on planning assumptions which have since been further refined through the campaign of learning,\u201d Flanagan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the squadron was deactivated, its Marines rotated to other units, and its helicopters and equipment were moved to preservation sites in the United States \u201cto maintain a flexible ready bench for the Service and preserve the ability to make future adjustments,\u201d according to Flanagan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The California-based Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 469 also was deactivated in December 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deactivations left five light attack helicopter squadrons in the active component, according to Flanagan: Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadrons 169, 267, 367 and 369 under the California-based 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, and just Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 167 under the North Carolina-based 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The active component also has a squadron for training Venom and Viper pilots, and the Reserve has two light attack helicopter squadrons, Flanagan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Retired Master Gunnery Sgt. Lawrence F. Reeve Jr., who was serving with the Gunrunners as a maintenance chief when it was deactivated, said he had an inkling even in 2022 that the deactivation wouldn\u2019t last. It was clear that the lone East-Coast-based light attack helicopter squadron \u2015 Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 167 \u2015 wasn\u2019t going to be enough to support the Corps\u2019 needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was tough to see,\u201d Reeve said of the Gunrunners\u2019 deactivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the Corps revives the unit, the helicopters will be brought back to operation from the sites where they had been preserved since the deactivation, according to Flanagan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The squadron will be formed with \u201ca significant contingent\u201d of Marines who had been part of the Gunrunners in the past, according to Flanagan. The rest of the squadron\u2019s people will come through the normal staffing processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Reeve, the reactivation of the unit where he spent much of his time in the Corps comes as good news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Combat has evolved, but Marines on the ground still benefit from having the light attack helicopters supporting them from above, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The retired master gunnery sergeant arrived at Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 269 as a lance corporal in 1994, returned to the squadron for long chunks of his career, deployed to Iraq with the squadron five times and held his retirement ceremony in 2023 from the squadron\u2019s hangar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his home in Michigan, he has a host of squadron photos, patches and coins, as well as the tail-rotor blade he received as a gift in 2001 when he departed the unit for recruiting duty, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe pride of being a Gunrunner was always there,\u201d Reeve said. \u201cI always wanted to be a Gunrunner and never wanted to be anything other than a Gunrunner.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome back, Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 269.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":64940,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_yoast_wpseo_meta-robots-noindex":"","_yoast_wpseo_meta-robots-nofollow":"","_yoast_wpseo_canonical":"","_acf":"","_yoast_wpseo_primary_category":69,"_jetpack_feature_clip_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","_smg_distribution_targets":{"2":{"categories":["your-military","home","newsletters"],"primary_category":"your-military"}}},"categories":[101,23,25,69],"tags":[],"coauthors":[3360],"class_list":["post-33006","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-daily-news-roundup","category-home","category-newsletters","category-your-marine-corps"],"acf":{"subheadline":"","legacy_arc_id":"4AU6XC7JQFHK3LAH5OUBUF5M5U","arc_canonical_url":"\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2024\/03\/21\/marine-corps-is-reviving-a-light-attack-helicopter-unit-it-cut-in-2022\/","remove_feature_photo":false,"is_sponsored":false,"subtype":"","redirect_url":"","disable_inline_ads":false,"native_logo_pretext":"Presented By:"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v26.0 (Yoast SEO v28.1) -
