{"id":33078,"date":"2023-10-20T17:18:20","date_gmt":"2023-10-20T17:18:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/10\/20\/mom-of-marine-veteran-who-died-by-suicide-is-running-100-100-miler-runs\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T21:00:31","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T21:00:31","slug":"mom-of-marine-veteran-who-died-by-suicide-is-running-100-100-miler-runs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/10\/20\/mom-of-marine-veteran-who-died-by-suicide-is-running-100-100-miler-runs\/","title":{"rendered":"Mom of Marine veteran who died by suicide is running 100 100-mile runs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rosie Gagnon started running long distances in 2017<b> <\/b>to contend with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2023\/01\/13\/va-to-pay-for-all-emergency-mental-health-care-starting-next-week\/\" target=\"_blank\">emotional turmoil at home.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her eldest son, Marine veteran James Dexter Morris, was going through a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/10\/16\/buddy-check-week-to-stem-veteran-suicides-starts-today\/\" target=\"_blank\"> mental health crisis,<\/a> including bipolar and schizoaffective disorders that progressively got worse. But even when he was in the hospital for his illnesses in 2017, he prompted Gagnon: You run so much, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/05\/24\/marine-corps-marathon-returns-in-october-in-person\/\" target=\"_blank\">you should run a marathon<\/a>, Mom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gagnon, a resident of Berryville, Virginia, ended up running her<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinemarathon.com\/event\/marine-corps-marathon\/mcm50k\/\" target=\"_blank\"> first ultramarathon,<\/a> a roughly 31.1-mile 50K, even before she tried her first 26.2-mile marathon. She fell in love with ultramarathons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then her son, called Dexter, challenged her to do the longest race she knew of: a 100-miler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou could do that \u2014 you already run so much,\u201d Gagnon recalled her son telling her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She was training for her first 100-mile race when Morris died by suicide Feb. 25, 2018, at the age of 23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was so catastrophic,\u201d Gagnon, now 50, said of her son\u2019s death. \u201cThere\u2019s just no words.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She told Marine Corps Times she thinks her running training \u201cprobably literally saved my life\u201d during the devastating weeks and months that followed February 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/veterans\/2023\/10\/16\/buddy-check-week-to-stem-veteran-suicides-starts-today\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"247\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/BuddyCheckWeek.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Buddy Check Week to stem veteran suicides starts today<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Veterans Affairs officials are asking vets to reach out to 10 friends to ensure they&#039;re getting the help and support they need.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, she is more than halfway toward her goal of running 100 100-mile runs<b> <\/b>to raise awareness for military and veteran suicide prevention, and to provide hope for families living with losses like hers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Growing up, Morris liked hunting, tussling and playing board games with his seven siblings, Gagnon said. Even as a preteen, he read voraciously about military history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an overweight 15-year-old, he decided he wanted to become a Marine, according to Gagnon. He surprised his mother by getting into shape through mixed-martial arts classes and ultimately enlisted in the Marine Corps. That was what he wanted, Gagnon said: to serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was a tough, independent person, but he was a mama\u2019s boy at heart, with her same sarcastic sense of humor, Gagnon said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While training in the Marine Corps to become an infantryman, Dexter Morris tore his ACL, and received opioids to treat the pain,<b> <\/b>according to Gagnon, who said her family now believes the opioids may have helped trigger the onset of Morris\u2019 mental illnesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2016, the private first class was medically separated from the Marine Corps, a difficult event for a young man who loved to serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll he ever wanted to do was be a Marine,\u201d Gagnon said. \u201cFrom his perspective, his life was just over.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After her son\u2019s death, Gagnon didn\u2019t want to get up in the mornings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But because she was training, she had to lace up her shoes and, \u201cin robot mode,\u201d run dozens of miles at a time multiple times per week. Those runs helped her get through the rest of the day, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first time she attempted a 100-mile race \u2014 April 2018, two months after her son\u2019s death \u2014 she had to drop out around 60 miles into the West Virginia course. She just couldn\u2019t run any further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gagnon, determined to finish the 100-mile distance in her son\u2019s memory, soon after signed up for another race: the Lighthouse 100 in Traverse, Michigan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In that June race, she felt her son\u2019s presence cheering her on across the miles, she recalled. Her family was there to support her, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As she crossed the finish line, she felt something unexpected: joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor a while, I didn\u2019t think I could ever feel any kind of happiness again,\u201d Gagnon said. \u201cIt still took a long time before that was a regular thing. But I always found it at the finish line of a 100-miler.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a race on a hilly trail in Ohio in<b> <\/b>fall 2019 that she was running in her son\u2019s memory, she squeaked across the finish line five minutes below the 32-hour cutoff, with pacing help from the race director and volunteers, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Afterward, Gagnon said, she had a feeling her son was telling her: You\u2019ve run enough for me, Mom; let\u2019s see if we can help someone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Rosie-Gagnon.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-64972\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Rosie-Gagnon.jpg.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Rosie-Gagnon.jpg.jpg?resize=300,169 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Rosie-Gagnon.jpg.jpg?resize=768,432 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Rosie-Gagnon.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,576 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rosie Gagnon, posing for a picture at the Silverheels 100 in Fairplay, Colorado, in June, is on a mission to run 100 miles 100 times. She has since learned that there\u2019s an official club of those who have completed 100 100-mile races specifically, she noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve added a secondary goal for 100 100 official races, but those early runs were an integral part of my survivor story and learning to move forward with Dexter in spirit, so I am counting self supported races in my goal of 100 100s,\u201d she wrote in a follow-up email to Marine Corps Times. \u201cWhen I hit that I\u2019ll continue to get in the books while still running for veteran suicide awareness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2023\/05\/05\/sailors-suicide-prompts-new-speedier-process-for-troops-seeking-help\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"161\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/20190524_160615.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Sailor\u2019s suicide prompts new, speedier process for troops seeking help<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A new referral process for mental health services is designed to be confidential and streamlined.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/02\/08\/biden-misstates-veterans-suicide-problem-in-state-of-the-union-speech\/\">Approximately 20<\/a> veterans and service members die by suicide each day, according to Veterans Affairs numbers. Officials from America\u2019s Warrior Partnership in 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/09\/17\/veterans-suicide-rate-may-be-double-federal-estimates-study-suggests\/\">estimated the number was significantly higher<\/a> with drug overdoses factored in, Military Times previously reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gagnon said of families who have lost loved ones who served to suicide, \u201cThey just don\u2019t quite fit in with anyone. It\u2019s like a unique kind of grief that\u2019s very difficult and stigmatized.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She wants those families to know that their loved ones were heroes, because they chose to serve. And she wants them to know that it\u2019s possible to survive losing a loved one to suicide. That it\u2019s possible to honor that loved one\u2019s life. That it\u2019s possible to feel joy again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gagnon\u2019s story, and mission, is reminiscent of that of Marine veteran <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/06\/27\/a-reason-to-continue-fighting-our-veteran-of-the-years-positive-message\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rob Jones<\/a>, who ran 31 marathons in 31 days despite having lost the bottom of both his legs to an improvised explosive device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want to show other vets who have experienced trauma that there\u2019s a path,\u201d Jones told Marine Corps Times in 2018. \u201cA reason to continue fighting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/10\/28\/blind-double-amputee-vet-gears-up-for-his-9th-marine-corps-marathon\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Corps Marathon<\/a> on Oct. 29 will form the beginning of Gagnon\u2019s 60th 100-miler, approximately four years after she began this endeavor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the first 26.2 miles<b> <\/b>around the National Capital Region, Gagnon will run the remaining 73.8 miles toward Mount Vernon in Virginia and then back around<b> <\/b>Washington, she said. Her hope is to complete the 100 miles in under 28 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gagnon has been partnering with the nonprofit organization Wear Blue: Run to Remember, to honor the lives of service members and veterans who have died by suicide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inspired by Gagnon, Wear Blue has called on its supporters to engage in suicide-prevention activities as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wearblueruntoremember.org\/warrior-100\">Warrior 100<\/a> initiative. Wear Blue also is partnering with the Cohen Veterans Network for the initiative, according to Lee Yoneyama, Wear Blue\u2019s director of operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The marathon, which is managed by Marines, carries a special meaning for Gagnon: She loves Marines, and Dexter Morris loved being one, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe was a good man, and a good son, and a great brother, and he wanted to be a good father,\u201d Gagnon said. \u201cAn illness stole that from him. \u2026 He wanted to serve, and I\u2019m hoping by doing this, it\u2019s giving him a way that he can still serve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Editor\u2019s note: Troops, veterans and family members experiencing suicidal thoughts can call the 24-hour Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988 or 1-800-273-8255, text 838255, or visit <\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/veteranscrisisline.net\/\" target=\"_blank\"><i>VeteransCrisisLine.net<\/i><\/a><i>.<\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rosie Gagnon lost her Marine veteran son, Dexter, in 2018.
