Robert Sucher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He has maintained his trim build by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/04\/25\/new-mascot-for-san-diego-marine-recruit-depot-has-big-paws-to-fill\/\" target=\"_blank\">chasing after shadows,<\/a> even if he refuses to attend the Marines\u2019 physical fitness test without being coaxed with food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gPR39f1tIeA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen title=\"Marine mascot receives a promotion\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He has served as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2022\/02\/03\/marine-corps-welcomes-its-newest-mascot\/\" target=\"_blank\">the public face of the Marine Corps<\/a> at the White House, in Congress and at a Naval Academy baseball game, even if attempts to train him to carry the first pitch to home plate had nothing to show for themselves besides several chewed-up baseballs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chesty\u2019s dogged efforts finally paid off on Wednesday, when the Marine Corps mascot was promoted to lance corporal after 13 months as a private first class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s because of his proven discipline,\u201d Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro said in remarks at the ceremony at Marine Barracks Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Chesty-promotion.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-64994\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Chesty-promotion.jpg.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Chesty-promotion.jpg.jpg?resize=300,169 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Chesty-promotion.jpg.jpg?resize=768,432 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Chesty-promotion.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,576 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sgt. At first, the Navy secretary had some difficulty fitting the uniform over the English bulldog\u2019s neck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cChesty\u2019s been working out \u2014 his neck size has grown,\u201d Del Toro said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Chesty took his first few steps as a lance corporal, he shook himself vigorously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bulldog now outranked about a quarter of the Marines in attendance at the standing-room-only event, Del Toro observed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mascot enlisted in the Marine Corps in February 2022 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/12\/14\/marine-corps-top-dog-promoted-to-private-1st-class\/\" target=\"_blank\">was promoted to private first class<\/a> that December. The first, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/84547\/birth-marine-corps-mascot\">Jiggs<\/a>, enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1922 and attained the rank of sergeant major in two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chesty is the 16th Marine mascot to bear the name in honor of the legendary Lt. Gen. Lewis \u201cChesty\u201d Puller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sgt. Scott Rogers, in whose home Chesty resides, said the lance corporal \u201cpersonifies\u201d the mission of Marine Barracks Washington: to interact with the public and bring joy to people. When Rogers brings Chesty to work, he said, the other Marines\u2019 faces light up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cChesty\u2019s going to have a high burden for mentoring and leading his junior Marines going forward, so a lot of responsibility is on Chesty\u2019s shoulders now,\u201d Rogers said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outside of work, Chesty \u2014 whom Rogers characterized as a \u201cmostly good boy\u201d \u2014 likes pizza, belly rubs and playing with the two other dogs in Rogers\u2019 family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Marine Corps Times asked Chesty for comment, he gave the microphone a few sniffs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Now-Lance Cpl.
