{"id":33858,"date":"2019-02-25T17:59:43","date_gmt":"2019-02-25T17:59:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/02\/25\/testing-begins-this-summer-on-soft-kill-hard-kill-systems-to-protect-ground-vehicles\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:53:56","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:53:56","slug":"testing-begins-this-summer-on-soft-kill-hard-kill-systems-to-protect-ground-vehicles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/02\/25\/testing-begins-this-summer-on-soft-kill-hard-kill-systems-to-protect-ground-vehicles\/","title":{"rendered":"Testing begins this summer on \u2018soft kill,\u2019 \u2018hard kill\u2019 systems to protect ground vehicles"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army will combine a suite of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/10\/10\/the-armys-next-tank-might-not-be-a-tank-at-all\/\" target=\"_blank\">missiles and an electronic jammer<\/a> on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/07\/03\/this-prototype-helmet-and-sensors-could-help-bradley-drivers-solve-a-decades-old-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bradley <\/a>this summer as it searches for new ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/09\/20\/the-army-is-converting-two-bcts-as-it-beefs-up-its-fighting-force-for-the-next-big-war\/\" target=\"_blank\">keep its vehicle fleet alive<\/a> in an era of near-peer combat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In mid-February the Army announced that the BAE Systems RAVEN countermeasure beat out competitors in a \u201csoft kill\u201d rodeo that consisted of a six-week evaluation where the Army fired anti-tank missiles at the systems to see which system provided the best protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it wasn\u2019t the attention-grabbing missiles being evaluated, part of the well known portion of the Active Protection Systems. It was another layer of protection \u2014 using electronic jammers to confuse missile systems, making them stray off course or cease functioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2019\/01\/15\/major-upgrades-are-on-the-way-for-the-armys-missiles-tanks-and-artillery\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Army-HIMARS.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Major upgrades are on the way for the Army\u2019s missiles, tanks and artillery<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">These moves are in line with Army-wide efforts to get back to the near-peer fight and beef up unit equipment.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year, the Army chose Trophy APS for its Abrams tanks, as did the Marine Corps. The Army expects to equip four armored brigade combat teams by late 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It picked the Iron Fist APS for the Bradley and is still searching for an effective system to mount on the Stryker, according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dote.osd.mil\/pub\/reports\/FY2018\/pdf\/army\/2018aps.pdf\" target=_blank>Pentagon report<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But those are the traditional, missile-on-missile methods. The problem is that vehicles can hold only so many of those shots to counter incoming rounds. The soft kill option helps by providing a deeper magazine, allowing crews to take out between half and three-quarters of most threats before having to reach into their hard-kill ammo stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The recent \u201csoft-kill rodeo\u201d gave researchers and officials a way to evaluate the other method in the real world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe rodeo proved the high potential of soft kill countermeasures to protect our soldiers and platforms from broadly proliferated and lethal threats,\u201d said Jason Morse, Electronic Defeat team leader for the Army research center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event also showed a few firsts for the Modular Active Protection Systems program: \u201cthe first field test of the entire MAPS Base Kit; the first full, end-to-end cue, slew and defeat for multiple MAPS APS instantiations; and the first time subsystems from three different vendors were integrated into a single system.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The RAVEN Multifunction Countermeasure beat out Northrop Grumman\u2019s Multifunction Electro-Optical System (MEOS) and the Color Light Operational Unit for Deflection (CLOUD) developed by Ariel Photonics Group in Israel and modified for use in the United States by Lockheed Martin, according to the Army release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the RAVEN system isn\u2019t necessarily brand new to the Army. It\u2019s actually a system used on aircraft that\u2019s being adapted to the more cluttered, sometimes confusing, ground fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BAE Executive Ryan Edwards told <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/2019\/02\/army-adapts-aircraft-ew-to-protect-tanks-bae-raven\/\" target=_blank>Breaking Defense<\/a> that there is work to be done but the system could be ready in about two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have a pretty well known and deep history of aircraft platform protection and the RAVEN countermeasure is our attempt to adapt some of that \u2026 at a price point \u2026 that make it more relevant for ground combat vehicles,\u201d Edwards told<a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/2019\/02\/army-picks-bae-jammer-to-kill-russian-missiles-softly\/\" target=_blank> Breaking Defense<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019re still working closely with the customer
