He didn\u2019t have a mean bone in his body. He was a devout man of God and regularly would listen to scriptures on the radio,\u201d said Tony Bianchini, the union\u2019s communications director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nicknamed \u201cHand Grenade,\u201d Bey started boxing in the Army; he was a member of the All-Army boxing team during his time in service, according to <a>his obituary<\/a> and a piece published by <a>the Philadelphia Inquirer<\/a>. A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1985\/03\/14\/sports\/bet-plans-to-spoil-big-holmes-finale.html?mcubz=1\">New York Times piece<\/a> previewing his 1985 title fight with Holmes said Bey worked with demolition squads and followed in the Army footsteps of his father, who served during World War II and boxed fellow soldier Joe Louis in exhibitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He left service in 1979 and made his pro boxing debut two years later with a second-round knockout of James \u201cBuster\u201d Douglas, who would go on to claim the heavyweight crown from Mike Tyson in 1990 in one of the biggest upsets in sports history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"341\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_17262619605520.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67818\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_17262619605520.jpg.jpg 512w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_17262619605520.jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">David Bey, right, speaks to Muhammad Ali during a 1993 news conference in Beijing. (Greg Baker, AP File)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bey beat Greg Page in 1984 for the United States Boxing Association\u2019s heavyweight championship to run his pro record to 14-0. He lost his next fight to Holmes, who was then the International Boxing Federation heavyweight champion, via 10th-round technical knockout in 1985 in Las Vegas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bey left the ring in 1994 after fights against heavyweight title contenders such as Trevor Berbick, Tyrell Biggs and Bruce Seldon. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Boxing Hall of Fame this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OSHA is investigating the construction
