This Marine officer says \u2018yes\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sanctioned psychedelic drug use as a medical or psychological treatment method is gaining ground as part of today\u2019s hallucinogenic renaissance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recent scientific studies approved by the Food and Drug Administration have yielded positive cognitive results when administering \u201cmicrodoses&#8221; of the drugs lysergic acid diethylamide, or LSD, and psilocybin, the alkaloid in hallucinogenic mushrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But could this new wave of unorthodox treatment ever find its way into the ranks of the military? According to an article by Marine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miramar.marines.mil\/Photos\/igphoto\/2000807858\/\" target=_blank>Maj. Emre Albayrak<\/a> that was published in the February issue of the <a href=\"https:\/\/mca-marines.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Albayrak.pdf\" target=_blank>Marine Corps Gazette<\/a>, it certainly should.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2018\/05\/09\/psychedelic-drug-provides-relief-for-veterans-with-ptsd\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" to show promising results as a treatment option.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microdosing, which refers to administering a minuscule quantity of the drug in order to avoid hallucinations or debilitating effects in the patient, is already being used by \u201cscientists, Silicon Valley executives, biologists, biohackers, and others\u201d to achieve a mental edge, Albayrak <a href=\"https:\/\/mca-marines.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Albayrak.pdf\" target=_blank>writes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Administering in such doses has the potential to \u201csignificantly heighten alertness, creativity, and problem solving.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today\u2019s service members, especially those in the intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance communities, are faced with the nearly-insurmountable task of analyzing a rapidly-growing tidal wave of analytical data that, with today\u2019s advances in technology, will only continue to expose cognitive shortfalls, the <a href=\"https:\/\/mca-marines.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Albayrak.pdf\" target=_blank>author writes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personnel in these professions have made every attempt to stem that tide, employing approved pre-workout supplements, tobacco, caffeine or any other legal substances designed to raise a sense of alertness or boost productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But an inability to process \u201csuperhuman\u201d amounts of information in a community in which \u201cone percent gains provide significant advantages\u201d on the battlefield necessitates a better solution, Albayrak suggests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enter LSD and magic mushrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLike most hallucinogens, LSD mimics the effects of serotonin (a mood regulator),\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miramar.marines.mil\/Photos\/igphoto\/2000807858\/\" target=_blank>author<\/a> says, and activates enhanced mental acuity in the areas of learning and memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, the drug commonly referred to as \u201cacid\u201d can decrease blood circulation to the part of the brain that instigates periods of mind wandering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while the use of performance-enhancing drugs like Ritalin or Adderall to combat the dreaded attention lapse is well-documented, both drugs \u201care amphetamines and carry a variety of side effects,\u201d including kidney failure, rhabdomyolysis and addiction risk, Albayrak says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With microdoses of psychedelic drugs, meanwhile, military personnel can potentially \u201cconnect seemingly unconnected pieces of information and create revolutionary new solutions.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This group includes \u201cNobel Prize\u2013winning scientists admitting their use of small doses of LSD to boost thought,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/mca-marines.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Albayrak.pdf\" target=_blank>Albayrak says<\/a>, as well as the late CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs, who called dropping acid &#8220;a profound experience, one of the most important things in my life. LSD shows you that there\u2019s another side to the coin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The military should join the growing list of psychedelic beneficiaries, the author writes, to become \u201cstronger, faster and smarter than our adversaries.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one wants a level playing field in combat, after all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWorld Anti-Doping Agency doping control officers are not taking samples after missions to ban Marines from \u2018competition,&#8217;\u201d Albayrak writes. \u201cOur enemies are already seeking an edge over us through PEDs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chances of the military signing off on the use of psychedelic performance enhancers are slim, but with societal attitudes toward psychedelics trending in the direction they are, it\u2019s worth a discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just last year, another round of test results using a different psychedelic party drug continued to show promise as a treatment option for patients with chronic post-traumatic stress disorder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study, published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanpsy\/article\/PIIS2215-0366(18)30135-4\/fulltext\">Lancet Psychiatry<\/a> journal, found that MDMA, the main ingredient in ecstasy or molly, dramatically reduced PTSD symptoms in study participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a follow-up one month after the second therapy session, researchers found that symptoms of PTSD were effectively eliminated in 68 percent of the study\u2019s participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therapy, coupled with MDMA, has the capability to \u201creduce fear and defensiveness, enhance communication and introspection, and increase empathy and compassion, enhancing the therapeutic process,\u201d according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maps.org\/news\/media\/6786-press-release-fda-grants-breakthrough-therapy-designation-for-mdma-assisted-psychotherapy-for-ptsd,-agrees-on-special-protocol-assessment-for-phase-3-trials\">press release<\/a> from the California-based nonprofit, Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response to continued success, MDMA was given \u201cbreakthrough therapy\u201d status in 2017 by the FDA. Demonstrating significant efficacy and safety in an additional round of testing is expected to result in full FDA approval by 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a poll of nearly 1,400 Military Times readers, 87 percent said they were in favor of granting veterans access to MDMA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These developments have not been lost on active-duty personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThough the idea is radical, it must be understood that this is neither a sideways attempt to allow Marines to ingest illicit substances nor to be mistaken as a half-baked attempt to recreate previously failed paranormal experiments,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/mca-marines.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Albayrak.pdf\" target=_blank>author writes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This is a serious foray and discussion about considering the use of cognitive PEDs to increase productiv- ity, creativity, problem-solving ability, and flow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Maj.
