Raquel C. Bono, director of the Defense Health Agency, in an announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through prescription drug monitoring programs, medical providers and pharmacies can track how many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/military-benefits\/health-care\/2017\/07\/21\/tricare-now-covers-more-treatment-options-for-mental-health-substance-abuse-such-as-opioid-addiction\/\" target=_blank>controlled substance prescriptions<\/a> a patient receives, and the quantity and strength of the medications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Concerns have been raised about DoD\u2019s inability to provide this data to the states, and to get data from the states, in ongoing efforts to battle the nationwide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/02\/02\/army-working-on-more-ways-to-manage-soldiers-pain-in-fight-against-opioid-abuse\/\" target=\"_blank\">opioid addiction<\/a> crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defense Health Agency officials are negotiating agreements with the states to begin the process for sharing prescription data; nine states and territories have signed. The intent is to have all states connect to the network in the near future, according to an announcement from the Defense Health Agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/management\/pay-benefits\/2018\/12\/04\/one-in-four-troops-have-an-opioid-prescription-in-a-given-year\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_16253810958894.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">1 in 4 troops have an opioid prescription in a given year<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Overall, opioid prescription rates are decreasing in the Military Health System.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DoD began sharing its controlled substance prescription information through the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy\u2019s Prescription Monitoring Program Interconnect System on Dec. 20. This system allows civilian providers to see information for patients who received their controlled substance medications at a military hospital, clinic or pharmacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawmakers included a provision in the fiscal 2019 National Defense Authorization Act that required DoD to set up the Military Health System Prescription Drug Monitoring Program, comparable to drug monitoring programs operated by the states. It was a challenge to share the data previously because of operational security, officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In her statement, Bono thanked Congress for giving DoD the tool to help protect its patients from the dangers of opioid disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The monitoring program \u201cwill give the Military Health System and civilian sector alike a powerful tool for opioid safety that also meets our unique requirements for operational security,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sharing this
