{"id":35341,"date":"2017-11-09T21:26:32","date_gmt":"2017-11-09T21:26:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2017\/11\/09\/in-new-video-tom-hanks-asks-the-public-to-help-combat-veteran-suicides\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T07:02:37","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T07:02:37","slug":"in-new-video-tom-hanks-asks-the-public-to-help-combat-veteran-suicides","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/military-honor\/2017\/11\/09\/in-new-video-tom-hanks-asks-the-public-to-help-combat-veteran-suicides\/","title":{"rendered":"In new video, Tom Hanks asks the public to help combat veteran suicides"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Department of Veterans Affairs and Johnson &amp; Johnson have released a new public service announcement aimed at combating the high rate of veteran suicides in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA handshake, a phone call, a simple gesture make a big difference to a veteran in crisis,\u201d Tom Hanks says in his narration of the video, which was published to Johnson &amp; Johnson\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=i-xKK2HbmpI\">YouTube channel<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the United States, an average of 20 veterans a day commit suicide, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/violenceprevention\/suicide\/statistics\/\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>. The new video calls on the American public to take action by reaching out to veterans who may be in crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe issue of suicide is an American public health crisis, but among veterans, we know it\u2018s an even bigger issue.
