href=\"https:\/\/www.boeing.com\/defense\/v-22-osprey\/\" target=_blank>V-22 Osprey<\/a> aircraft entered service more than a dozen years ago, Navy officials still can\u2019t figure out how to keep dirt and sand from clogging the tiltrotor\u2019s engines and causing potentially catastrophic mechanical failure, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dodig.mil\/reports.html\/Article\/2013486\/evaluation-of-the-v22-engine-air-particle-separator-dodig-2020-006\/\" target=_blank>a report<\/a> released this month by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dodig.mil\/reports.html\/Article\/2013486\/evaluation-of-the-v22-engine-air-particle-separator-dodig-2020-006\/\" target=_blank>Defense Department\u2019s Office of the Inspector General<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Operated by the Marine Corps and Air Force but overseen by the Navy, Ospreys rely on innovative tiltrotor engines that allow them to take off and land like helicopters but fly like fixed-wing planes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But keeping sand and soil from being sucked into the engines when the aircraft picks up or drops off personnel on natural terrain continues to bedevil the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navair.navy.mil\/\" target=_blank>Naval Air Systems Command<\/a> program office, according to the IG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/media.defense.gov\/2018\/Oct\/05\/2002048868\/-1\/-1\/1\/PROJECT%20ANNOUNCEMENT%20D000PT-0202.000_REDACTED.PDF\" target=_blank>Engine Air Particle Separator<\/a>, or EAPS, was supposed to shield the Osprey\u2019s engines from particulates, but NAVAIR officials have repeatedly failed to design an adequate EAPS since the aircraft first entered service in 2007, IG investigators wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EAPS is placed in front of the engine and is supposed to create a powerful vacuum to pull dirt away before it can enter the engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without EAPS, too much soil can inhibit engine air flow, raising the risk of midair engine failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/06\/24\/despite-massive-show-of-air-power-nearly-40-percent-of-marine-corps-mv-22-ospreys-are-not-mission-capable\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/osprey.jpg_462677.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Despite massive shows of air power, nearly 40 percent of Marine Ospreys are not mission capable<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Osprey is the Corps\u2019 \u201cmost in-demand and deployed aircraft.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ospreys suffered eight \u201crapid power loss events\u201d in the engines due to EAPS failure between 2008 and 2015, according to the IG report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAlthough the eight engine rapid power loss events did not result in a catastrophic accident, the engines had degraded to a point where engine failure was possible,\u201d IG determined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe V-22 remains at risk despite more than nine years of EAPS redesign attempts,\u201d the IG report states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NAVAIR undertook but aborted two EAPS redesign efforts over the past decade and is in the midst of a third try, which IG believes might not provide proper engine protection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials with the V-22 Joint Program Office \u201ccould not provide analysis that demonstrated whether this redesign would adequately protect the engine,\u201d according to the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Program officials also \u201cstated that is it not technically feasible to meet the engine manufacturer\u2019s specification for air quality in a desert environment,\u201d IG found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAlthough the third EAPS redesign may remove more soil than the original EAPS, (program office officials) could not provide any analysis demonstrating the expected results\u2026or whether the EAPS would remove enough soil to adequately protect the engine when operating in all desert environments,\u201d according to IG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While V-22 program officials told IG they could not test for every type of soil an Osprey may operate in, investigators noted in the report that the office is not taking advantage of the military\u2019s ability to tailor soil samples for aircraft testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/03\/05\/in-potential-osprey-fix-marine-corps-finds-it-may-have-misplaced-blame-in-2015-crash\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">In potential Osprey fix, Marine Corps finds it may have misplaced blame in 2015 crash<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Knowing what the Marine Corps knows now, &quot;it would be unfair to paint that [the 2015] mishap in the same light.&quot;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Program officials pushed back on the IG\u2019s recommendation that the office review alternatives to help ensure the EAPS protects the Ospreys in all environments and argued that such a prescription fails to take into account the program office\u2019s \u201cmulti-layered approach\u201d to solving the EAPS problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But IG officials wrote that \u201cIt is not clear what impact this multi-layered approach may have on the reliability of the V-22 engine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Deputy Program Manager\u2026stated that extensive research has led (the program office) to conclude that it is not technically possible to develop, integrate and field an EAPS that is fully capable of protecting the V-22 engine from all possible soil types and concentrations for unlimited durations,\u201d according to the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other program office efforts include an aircrew notification system, so that members on board can be made aware of \u201cimpending engine degradation,\u201d IG indicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program office initially confronted EAPS glitches in 2010. While operating in desert conditions, engines that were supposed to run for 500 hours before replacement could manage only 200 hours of service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the program office was developing the specification for the EAPS design, it didn\u2019t require the system to meet the engine manufacturer\u2019s performance specification, according to the IG report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This month\u2019s report is the latest to raise questions about the Osprey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Data released by the Marine Corps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/06\/24\/despite-massive-show-of-air-power-nearly-40-percent-of-marine-corps-mv-22-ospreys-are-not-mission-capable\/\" target=_blank>earlier this year<\/a> also revealed the Osprey fleet\u2019s mission capable rate hovered at less than 60 percent due to maintenance problems and staffing
