Previously, Marines were allowed to spend up to six months in the program prior to ending their contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials have cited a hefty loss of manpower in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between fiscal year 2021 and 2024, the \u201cservice conservatively estimates more than 3,400 years of manpower\u201d were used in the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe update balances transition support and force readiness,\u201d according to the message. \u201cSkillBridge authorization is at the commander\u2019s discretion; it is not a service members\u2019 entitlement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2024\/04\/16\/retiring-marines-have-to-give-6-months-notice-up-from-4-months\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Retirement.jpg_0181bd.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Retiring Marines have to give 6 months\u2019 notice, up from 4 months<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Want to retire from the Marine Corps? The service now requires at least six months&#039; heads up.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/education-transition\/2021\/01\/06\/dod-skillbridge-the-best-military-transition-program-you-didnt-know-existed\/\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Defense-wide program<\/a> allows active-duty personnel from all four branches to spend the last 180 days of their military service interning at a civilian job with one of more than 500 industry partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2024\/06\/18\/marine-corps-limits-job-transition-program-3-4-months-undercutting-pentagon-approved-timeline.html\" target=\"_blank\">Military.com<\/a> reported on the administrative message release Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe impact on the command and needs of the service must be considered and prioritized, and readiness to the force remains paramount,\u201d according to the message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the new guidance, the amount of time that a Marine, if approved by their command, can spend in the program depends on their rank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marines up to the rank of sergeant can use up to 120 days. Marines from the rank of staff sergeant and above, to include warrant officers and commissioned officers, may spend up to 90 days in the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the service focuses on readiness, recruiting and retention alongside its expeditionary demands, it also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marines.mil\/News\/Messages\/Messages-Display\/Article\/3739611\/interim-guidance-for-retirement-and-resignation-requests\/\" target=\"_blank\">announced in mid-April<\/a> that it would require Marines to notify the service if they intend to retire six months prior to their retirement date. The previous requirement was four months, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2024\/04\/16\/retiring-marines-have-to-give-6-months-notice-up-from-4-months\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Corps Times<\/a> previously reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In October 2023, the Marines released a document citing similar cuts to SkillBridge but later pulled the \u201cpremature\u201d document from its website, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/11\/27\/no-cuts-to-marines-job-transition-program-for-now\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Corps Times<\/a> previously reported. Those changes did not go into effect, but officials acknowledged that the Corps was evaluating its SkillBridge policy, to \u201cbalance the needs of the individual Marine\u201d with Congressional intent and \u201ca mission-capable Marine Corps.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reactions at the time on the popular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/USMC\/\" target=\"_blank\">Reddit USMC<\/a> thread ranged from shortening the time would affect whether Marines could get jobs post-service, to others noting that the program was always discretionary, and some individuals misused the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou signed the contract to serve a certain amount of time to do a job the Marine Corps trained you to do, and taxpayers are paying you to do,\u201d one user posted. \u201cShow me in your contract where you are entitled to Skillbridge at all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe \u2018you\u2019re not owed anything\u2019 or \u2018squeeze the last out of you\u2019 mentality is what is driving people to the door.
