William Howard Hughes Jr. was apprehended this week in his California home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hughes was arrested without incident by Air Force Office of Special Investigations special agents on June 6, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.osi.af.mil\/News\/Article-Display\/Article\/1543759\/osi-captures-most-wanted-af-fugitive\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">OSI.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hughes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/2016\/03\/01\/army-deserter-pleads-not-guilty-to-gun-charges\/\">deserted <\/a>from the Air Force in 1983 after returning from Western Europe, where he was on temporary duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force formally declared Hughes a deserter on Dec. 9, 1983. At the time, <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/1986-07-06\/opinion\/op-23298_1_u-s-air-force\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">intelligence officers<\/a> believed that Hughes was either captured by Soviet Union agents or had voluntarily defected to the Soviet Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the 35 years since his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2015\/10\/15\/afghan-military-officer-deserts-in-u-s-arrested-in-montana\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">desertion<\/a>, interviews with his friends, coworkers and associates were not helpful in locating Hughes. Law enforcement agencies were also unaware of Hughes\u2019 location. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/06\/06\/air-force-selects-567-officers-for-promotion\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Colonel-pinning-promotion-small.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Air Force selects 567 officers for promotion<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Air Force has selected 567 active-duty officers for promotion to colonel, lieutenant colonel and major, the Air Force Personnel Center said Wednesday.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On June 5, the State Department\u2019s Diplomatic Security Service conducted an interview on passport fraud with an individual who identified himself as Barry O\u2019Beirne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His cover blown because of inconsistencies in his story, the man revealed himself to be the missing Hughes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Hughes, he left the Air Force because of depression and created the fake identity of Barry O\u2019Beirne. Hughes had been living in California under that name since his desertion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a captain, Hughes was assigned to the Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He worked on classified planning and analysis of NATO command, control and communications surveillance systems.
