{"id":35907,"date":"2025-05-01T16:01:55","date_gmt":"2025-05-01T16:01:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2025\/05\/01\/top-marine-calls-for-affordable-lethal-and-autonomous-systems\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T21:03:21","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T21:03:21","slug":"top-marine-calls-for-affordable-lethal-and-autonomous-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/modern-day-marine\/2025\/05\/01\/top-marine-calls-for-affordable-lethal-and-autonomous-systems\/","title":{"rendered":"Top Marine calls for affordable, lethal and autonomous systems"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps\u2019 highest-ranking officer continues to emphasize the service\u2019s key mission in crisis response through its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/land\/2025\/04\/29\/this-unit-will-be-the-next-to-field-the-corps-ship-killing-missile\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/land\/2025\/04\/29\/this-unit-will-be-the-next-to-field-the-corps-ship-killing-missile\/\">expeditionary units<\/a>, while asking industry to give the Corps affordable and autonomous ways to modernize the force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marine Corps Commandant Eric Smith told the audience at the annual Modern Day Marine exposition Thursday that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/air\/2025\/04\/30\/with-new-jets-marines-need-new-weapons-for-future-fights\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/air\/2025\/04\/30\/with-new-jets-marines-need-new-weapons-for-future-fights\/\">force design<\/a> decisions made over the past six years have put new capabilities in the hands of crucial formations, such as the Marine Expeditionary Unit, or MEU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is about more than ships, it\u2019s about deterrence and denial,\u201d Smith said. \u201cThat is why the 3.0 [Amphibious Ready Group] MEU matters, it gives our leaders options.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 3.0 presence means a three-ship ARG-MEU, each deployed out of the East Coast, one out of the West Coast and a third on episodic deployments out of Okinawa, Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2025\/04\/08\/top-marines-deployment-plans-face-familiar-wrinkle-inert-navy-ships\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/boxer.jpg_ed80bc.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Top Marine\u2019s deployment plans face familiar wrinkle: Inert Navy ships<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Amphibious ships have fallen below a readiness rate of 50% due to maintenance and procurement backlogs.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An ARG includes an assault ship, a landing ship with helicopter platform and a dock landing ship. The MEU contains a battalion landing team, ground combat element, aviation combat element and combat logistics element to form a Marine Air Ground Task Force, or MAGTF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To achieve that, the Corps needs 31 amphibious ships at a readiness level of 80%. Demand is higher from combatant commands, Smith said. The demand is more than five ARG MEUs, the most requested asset behind the Carrier Strike Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Readiness levels hover at around 50%, Smith said in early April at the Navy League\u2019s annual Sea-Air-Space Exposition. That\u2019s because following two decades of land-based wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Corps had largely not maintained its fleet. Money for maintenance and shipbuilding went to those wars instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And Smith wants more capabilities for those MEUs as the service battles an amphibious ship shortage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat I need is affordable, lethal, autonomous, light and I can fund at budget time,\u201d Smith said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of those new developments include the Marine Air Defense Integrated System, or MADIS, and its lighter version, the L-MADIS. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system still needs more autonomous solutions to get after a major threat \u2013 drone swarms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe big thing that really keeps me up at night is swarms,\u201d Col. Andrew Konicki, head of ground-based air defense for Marine Corps Systems Command, said Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Striking those threats from aboard ship or on shore is vital to keeping Marines alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is how we\u2019re going to say ahead of the adversary, with autonomy,\u201d Smith said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thirteen of 21 Light Marine Air Defense Integrated Systems, or L-MADIS, have been fielded over the past three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That light system was fielded to the 3rd Littoral Anti-Air Battalion, 3rd Marine Littoral Regiment in 2024. It handles group I and II drone threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marine Expeditionary Units have used the system when crossing various maritime chokepoints, and it has proved effective in the maritime environment, despite the system being built mainly as a ground-based air defense system, Konicki said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seven more of the larger MADIS system will be fielded by September, bringing the Corps total to 20, with full fielding expected by 2033.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s for air defense. For a more offensive approach, the Corps expects to receive four-dozen mobile fires platforms, dubbed the Navy-Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System, or NMESIS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NMESIS is made up of a Naval Strike Missile mounted on a Joint Light Tactical Vehicle platform with semi-autonomous and autonomous capabilities to launch remotely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 3rd Marine Littoral Regiment, a newly created unit for fighting in the littorals, or waters near land, received the first six NMESIS in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Hawaii-based unit formed in 2021. The service then established the 12th MLR on Okinawa, Japan, with plans for a third rotational MLR on Guam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Six of the NMESIS systems are set to field with 12th MLR beginning March 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All these moves and the push for new, better equipment have a singular aim, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cModernization with a clear purpose \u2013 to keep Marines lethal and survivable,\u201d Smith said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The
