Leslie Shankles, of Arcadia, was buried with full military honors on Wednesday at the cemetery in Bourbon County. A graveside service took place in the cemetery&#8217;s committal shelter, with relatives, service members and veterans attending.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2018\/10\/10\/long-after-they-died-military-sees-surge-in-identifications\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP18274727757079.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Long after they died, military sees surge in identifications of the fallen in past conflicts<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Officials believe remains of nearly half of the 83,000 unidentified service members killed in World War II and more recent wars could be identified and returned to relatives.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joplinglobe.com\/news\/wwii-soldier-from-southeast-kansas-buried-seven-decades-after-death\/article_507f80c8-d7fc-11e8-afc1-9b8f69b8a879.html\" target=_blank>The Joplin Globe<\/a> reports Shankles was born in Vernon County, Missouri, and later lived in Crawford County, Kansas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was killed during a mission to demolish the enemy&#8217;s above-ground bunkers in a forest near Germeter, Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shankles was officially declared dead on Oct. 14, 1944. His remains were discovered in 1947.
