The most important thing was transparency and clear communication with the workforce, because at the end of the day, the goal is vaccines, shots in arms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2022\/01\/12\/va-wont-mail-out-covid-kits-but-veterans-can-get-free-tests-at-clinics\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22010702010721.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA won\u2019t mail out COVID kits but veterans can get free tests at clinics<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Federal officials are expected to distribute 500 million coronavirus test kits in coming weeks.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All VA health care workers were required to be vaccinated against the fast-spreading virus last fall, and all federal workers were mandated to get the vaccine by the end of November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McDonough said as of this week, about 90 percent of the workforce has been vaccinated, with most of the remainder applying for medical or religious waivers. Those requests are still being processed and analyzed, and officials would not say whether any have been granted or denied thus far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 3,000 employees \u2014 less than 1 percent of the entire department workforce \u2014 have not certified their vaccination status or applied for an exemption. McDonough said those individuals will be the first to face the most serious employment consequences, to include possible dismissals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But thus far, no one has lost their jobs. McDonough said leaders are continuing their internal education campaigns to encourage individuals to get vaccinated, and have seen about 37,000 individuals get their first dose since last fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat strikes me as a pretty meaningful indicator that we\u2019re having an impact,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked if he has concerns that the mandate could be seen as empty without any significant punishments so far, McDonough acknowledged the potential issue but said he is confident that officials are approaching the issue in the proper way.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/01\/13\/military-deployments-alone-wont-be-enough-to-fight-covid-surge-biden-says\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22013578382739.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Military deployments alone won\u2019t be enough to fight COVID surge, Biden says<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">About 1,000 military medical specialists will deploy to hard-hit hosptials in coming weeks to ease pressure on health care staff.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last summer, when he announced the vaccine mandate, McDonough framed the policy as a patient confidence issue, saying that veterans and visitors needed to know that staff was doing all they could to make VA medical centers as safe as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week, more than 14,600 VA health care employees \u2014 almost 4 percent of the health care workforce \u2014 were unable to work because of covid-related illnesses or exposure. Prior to the last month of surging virus cases, the pandemic high for VA staffers was around 6,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least 243 department workers have died from health issues related to coronavirus since the start of the pandemic in America in March 2020. More than 18,300 veterans and patients in the VA medical system have lost their lives, an average of about 27 individuals a day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Officials had said
