But supporters said the move is an important one for lawmakers to complete as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis bill would simplify the reporting process for colleges and universities to make GI Bill paperwork requirements easier and more straightforward,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/12\/03\/illinois-lawmaker-tapped-as-next-ranking-member-on-house-veterans-affairs-committee\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rep. Mike Bost<\/a>, R-Ill., and ranking member on the House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee, said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis will allow schools to focus on ensuring student veterans get the education they have earned without additional red tape.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/education-transition\/2022\/06\/06\/plan-would-give-va-more-power-to-protect-gi-bill-benefits-in-future-national-emergencies\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP20260558256913.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Plan would give VA more power to protect GI Bill benefits in future national emergencies<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Emergency powers given to VA leaders amid the coronavirus pandemic expired earlier this month.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congressional staff did not have an estimate on how many veterans may be directly impacted by the legislation, but veterans advocates say the problems behind the proposals have been burdensome for numerous schools in recent months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2021, Veterans Affairs officials updated a series of definitions and accounting methods surrounding the 85-15 rule, which requires that institutions of higher education receive at least 15% of their income from non-government sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials from Student Veterans of America said those changes forced significant reporting increases \u2014 \u201chundreds of hours of extra work\u201d \u2014 as administrators combed through details for every field of study and degree program to ensure compliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe potential, unintended consequences of the new requirements to limit student veterans\u2019 access to quality institutions cannot be overstated,\u201d said Lauren Augustine, vice president of government affairs for SVA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The changes would simplify the rules, ensuring that schools \u2014 especially institutions with limited staff and few veteran enrollees \u2014 can verify eligibility without overwhelming administrative effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/education-transition\/2022\/06\/24\/considerations-for-veterans-when-picking-a-college\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Considerations for veterans when picking a college<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Tips to pick the right college after your time in the service.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe 85-15 rule is an important safeguard in protecting students and their educational benefits from predatory fraud and abuse,\u201d said House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee Chairman Mark Takano, D-Calif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHowever, for schools with a small student veteran population, this rule has unintended negative consequences that limit student veterans from participating in their programs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both Takano and Bost are sponsoring the House bill.
