Veterans Day parade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But top Veterans Affairs officials said this week they\u2019ve had no involvement in the planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, there\u2019s no such thing as the annual Washington D.C. Veterans Day parade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week, defense officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/03\/10\/dod-memo-no-tanks-at-trumps-military-parade\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">released a planning memo<\/a> for the event that promised a national celebration highlighting \u201cthe contributions of our veterans throughout the history of the U.S. military \u2026 with an emphasis on the price of freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is set to include veterans and reenactors from every American conflict since the Revolutionary War, as well as aircraft and wheeled vehicles (but \u201cno tanks,\u201d according to the memo) from the current force.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2018\/03\/10\/dod-memo-no-tanks-at-trumps-military-parade\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ARM-parade-1-web.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">DoD memo: No tanks at Trump&#8217;s military parade<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Plans for a Veterans Day military parade, as directed by President Donald Trump, are coming together, but there will be no tanks rolling down the streets of Washington, D.C., according to a memo from the Pentagon.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Joint Chiefs of Staff and U.S. Northern Command officials will serve as the primary planners for the event. In the memo, they noted that \u201cveterans and Medal of Honor recipients should be surrounding [the president] in the reviewing area of the Capitol\u201d for the event, and that the national parade \u201cwill integrate with the annual D.C. Veteran\u2019s Day Parade.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That came as a surprise to local city officials, who said so such event exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have not hosted a Veterans Day parade,\u201d said LaToya Foster, press secretary for Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser. \u201cGenerally, there are a number of small events taking place in town.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those include a series of community service projects with local volunteers and veterans service organizations, which included more than 200 individuals last year. (Carolyn Kaster\/AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That work thus far has not included any contributions from the Department of Veterans Affairs, which already holds a massive Veterans Day celebration at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Wednesday, in testimony before the House Appropriations Committee, VA Secretary David Shulkin said that so far his office has had \u201cno discussions with the White House about participating in the parade.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also said that he hopes the new event doesn\u2019t distract from the department\u2019s existing plans to honor veterans that day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVeterans Day is a very important day to us,\u201d he said. \u201cWe put our resources and our efforts into the recognition at Arlington National Cemetery that day. We have no plans to change that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the past, President Donald Trump has praised the annual Bastille Day parade in France, which he attended last summer, as an inspiring showcase for that nation\u2019s military. He directed Pentagon officials to try and replicate that with the Veterans Day event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think it\u2019s great for spirit,\u201d he said during a Fox News interview last month. \u201cThe military loves it, they love the idea. \u2026 The generals would love to do it, I can tell you, and so would I. I think it\u2019s great for our country in terms of being a cheerleader and the spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exact costs for the event have not yet been determined. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2018\/02\/09\/democrats-offer-legislation-to-block-trumps-military-parade\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\">several Democratic lawmakers have already introduced legislation<\/a> to block the event, calling it a waste of time and resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/iava.org\/press-release\/post-911-veterans-sound-off-on-military-parade\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">a membership poll by Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America<\/a> found that roughly 70 percent of their respondents opposed the idea of a national military parade, against 22 percent who backed the idea.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Veterans
