{"id":39458,"date":"2019-06-07T16:38:52","date_gmt":"2019-06-07T16:38:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/06\/07\/as-military-toxic-exposure-illnesses-mount-advocates-push-for-more-action\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T07:30:03","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T07:30:03","slug":"as-military-toxic-exposure-illnesses-mount-advocates-push-for-more-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/veterans\/2019\/06\/07\/as-military-toxic-exposure-illnesses-mount-advocates-push-for-more-action\/","title":{"rendered":"Groups join forces to fight military toxic exposure"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than a dozen veterans advocacy groups will join forces to track and highlight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/03\/06\/battle-over-burn-pit-benefits-coming-to-congress-soon\/\" target=\"_blank\">toxic exposure illnesses<\/a> among former military members in an attempt to push for quicker action on what they see as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/04\/26\/dod-126-bases-report-water-contaminants-harmful-to-infant-development-tied-to-cancers\/\" target=\"_blank\">a looming health crisis<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Toxic Exposures in the American Military coalition, announced this week, will coordinate efforts from groups like Wounded Warrior Project, Vietnam Veterans of America, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, Veteran Warriors Inc., and the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus will be on issues related to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2018\/06\/07\/as-burn-pit-problems-linger-advocates-worry-va-and-dod-are-moving-too-slow\/\" target=\"_blank\">exposures in the recent wars<\/a>, although the groups have also advocated on illnesses related to chemical poisoning in the ranks from earlier periods.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/06\/04\/cancer-causing-foam-could-be-banned-in-military-training-next-year-off-military-bases-entirely-by-2029\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/3943145.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Cancer-causing foam could be banned in military training next year, off military bases entirely by 2029<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Under a congressional plan, Navy officials would have to identify a non-toxic alternative in the next five years.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe must do more to address the illnesses we are seeing in America&#8217;s service members and veterans as a result of toxic exposures,\u201d said WWP CEO Mike Linnington said in a statement. \u201cWe must honor the service and sacrifice of our nation&#8217;s warriors by working with Congress to provide the necessary care and resources to help those suffering.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move comes the same week Department of Justice officials announced they will not appeal a federal court ruling which awarded presumptive disability benefit status to about 90,000 \u201cblue water\u201d Vietnam veterans who served in ships at sea during the war there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The case, which has drug through the courts for years, was seen as a preview by many in the veterans community of the coming fight over benefits for veterans who developed health problems after serving near burn pits in Iraq and Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201cblue water\u201d veterans claims were denied by Veterans Affairs officials for years because of a lack of clear scientific evidence showing their exposure to cancer-causing defoliants used in Vietnam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly, illnesses connected to burn pits in the recent wars have proven difficult to conclusively link to a single source, because of the variety in the size of the fires and items burned in the waste pits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 165,000 veterans are enrolled in the VA&#8217;s Burn Pit Registry, which tracks exposure and illnesses related to the waste fires. But advocates say they believe the number of individuals who suffered health effects from the toxic smoke is many times that number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">House lawmakers are considering several measures to address the issue, including a provision sponsored by presidential candidate Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii (herself an Iraq War veteran), in this year\u2019s defense authorization bill requiring all burn pits exposure to be recorded in service members\u2019 medical records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the new group\u2019s effort will go beyond burn pits to include monitoring and highlighting adverse health effects from things like exposure to depleted uranium in ammunition and water contamination on military bases.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/06\/05\/90000-blue-water-vietnam-veterans-in-line-for-disability-benefits-after-justice-officials-drop-appeal\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_6509120108-1.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">90,000 \u2018blue water\u2019 Vietnam veterans in line for disability benefits after Justice officials drop appeal<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The move all but ends a years long legal fight over presumptive benefits for up to 90,000 Vietnam veterans.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue of cancer-causing polyfluoroalkyl substances (known as PFAS) from military firefighting foam has drawn the attention of Congress in recent months, after the Defense Department last year identified at least 126 military installations where it had found higher-than-recommended levels in local groundwater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Connected to the new coalition, Wounded Warrior Project is entering the second year of a partnership with TAPS, the American Legion, VVA and Burn Pits 360 to track toxic exposure illnesses among veterans and military families.
