Secretary of State Antony Blinken will meet with his Russian counterpart in Switzerland this week as tensions between the U.S. and Russia escalate over a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine<\/a>, the State Department said Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The State Department said Blinken will travel to Kyiv on Wednesday to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, move on to Berlin and then meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Geneva on Friday. The hastily arranged trip aims to show U.S. support for Ukraine and impress on Russia the need for de-escalation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

White House press secretary Jen Psaki underscored the urgency. \u201cWe\u2019re now at a stage where Russia could at any point launch an attack in Ukraine. And what Secretary Blinken is going to go do is highlight very clearly there is a diplomatic path forward,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Psaki said Russian President Vladimir Putin created the crisis by massing 100,000 troops along Ukraine\u2019s borders<\/a> and it is up to him and the Russians to decide whether to invade and then \u201csuffer severe economic consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. has not concluded whether Putin plans to invade or whether the show of force is intended to squeeze security concessions without an actual conflict. Russia has brushed off calls to withdraw its troops by saying it has a right to deploy its forces wherever it likes on its own territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blinken\u2019s meetings follow inconclusive diplomatic talks between Moscow and the West in Europe last week that failed to resolve stark disagreements over Ukraine and other security matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, those meetings appear to have increased fears of a Russian invasion, and the Biden administration has accused Russia of preparing a \u201cfalse flag operation\u201d<\/a> to use as a pretext for intervention. Russia has angrily denied the charge<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\t
