{"id":42818,"date":"2018-06-12T20:03:31","date_gmt":"2018-06-12T20:03:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/06\/12\/this-lighter-stronger-combat-helmet-is-headed-to-soldiers\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:00:00","slug":"this-lighter-stronger-combat-helmet-is-headed-to-soldiers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/off-duty\/gearscout\/2018\/06\/12\/this-lighter-stronger-combat-helmet-is-headed-to-soldiers\/","title":{"rendered":"This lighter, stronger combat helmet is headed to soldiers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In about a year, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2017\/03\/31\/the-army-s-new-combat-helmet-is-up-to-24-percent-lighter\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\">helmet <\/a>under development that shaves nearly half of the weight off soldiers\u2019 current helmet and provides better <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2017\/04\/16\/deploying-soldiers-could-see-lighter-body-armor-by-2018\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\">protection <\/a>will likely be on soldiers\u2019 heads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It uses the same <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2016\/10\/03\/helmet-cover-offers-upgraded-protection-technology-for-soldiers\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" target=\"_blank\" data-original-title=\"\" aria-describedby=\"popover110548\">materials<\/a>, shedding an additional accessory currently fielded, all through a change in how the plastic used to make it is processed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Developers with the Army\u2019s Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center have recently showcased the NSRDEC Prototype Helmet after first sharing some of the work being done on the helmet last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2017\/08\/12\/soldiers-test-the-armys-newest-new-combat-helmet\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IHPStest1.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Soldiers test the Army&#8217;s newest combat helmet<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">More than 100 combat engineers are testing the Integrated Head Protection System this month in Washington.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NSRDEC helmet is made from ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene, which is lighter than Kevlar. The shell of the new helmet weighs 2.5 pounds and the final weight puts it at 3.25 pounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s 40 percent less than the current helmet configuration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s kind of a competition between increased threat and weight,\u201d said Richard Green, the director of the Soldier Protection and Survivability Directorate at NSRDEC. \u201cWe want to protect against increased threat, while minimizing the weight. That\u2019s our goal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The less weight the soldier carries on his or her head the less fatigue they have to deal with, especially over missions that can last anywhere from 12 to 18 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1008\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Army-Combat-Helmet-Generation-II-prototype.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-86697\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Army-Combat-Helmet-Generation-II-prototype.jpg.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Army-Combat-Helmet-Generation-II-prototype.jpg.jpg?resize=300,202 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Army-Combat-Helmet-Generation-II-prototype.jpg.jpg?resize=768,516 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Army-Combat-Helmet-Generation-II-prototype.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,688 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">U.S. Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center, out of Natick, Massachusetts, has developed new processes for rendering plastics into ballistic materials. That has helped make the Army Combat Helmet Generation II a quarter lighter with more protection than the current helmet worn by soldiers. (Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the new material process gives a 2-pound weight savings over the current Integrated Head Protection System, which the Army tested with airborne units last year and is now fielding. That system requires a \u201cballistic applique\u201d that can provide rifle fire protection also, according to a Pentagon release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The standard ACH Gen II helmet protects against 9 mm rounds and some fragmentation.
