{"id":43329,"date":"2019-10-02T16:07:56","date_gmt":"2019-10-02T16:07:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/10\/02\/justice-officials-team-up-with-va-to-crack-down-on-medical-crimes\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T07:47:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T07:47:09","slug":"justice-officials-team-up-with-va-to-crack-down-on-medical-crimes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/veterans\/2019\/10\/02\/justice-officials-team-up-with-va-to-crack-down-on-medical-crimes\/","title":{"rendered":"Justice officials team up with VA to crack down on medical crimes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the wake of a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/08\/27\/multiple-suspicious-deaths-at-west-virginia-va-raise-concerns-over-criminal-activity\/\" target=_blank>high-profile criminal medical cases<\/a> at Veterans Affairs facilities, Department of Justice officials are teaming up with VA\u2019s Inspector General to form a new health care task force aimed at better identifying and deterring the illegal activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials said they are particularly concerned with a potential increase in fraud crimes involving veterans medical care following the expansion earlier this summer of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/05\/31\/with-major-changes-a-week-away-va-secretary-confident-his-department-is-ready\/\" target=_blank> VA\u2019s community care programs<\/a>, which allow veterans to seek medical care outside department facilities but at taxpayer expense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis Task Force sends a clear message to anyone considering committing health care fraud at VA \u2014 We will protect our veterans\u2019 health care system at all costs,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2018\/06\/19\/va-watchdog-accuses-leadership-of-withholding-access-to-employee-complaints\/\" target=\"_blank\">VA Inspector General Michael Missal <\/a>said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/08\/20\/former-va-medical-official-charged-in-deaths-of-three-patients\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6354516141_94aaca4595_o.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Former VA medical official charged in deaths of three patients<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Robert Morris Levy also faces multiple counts of fraud related to his attempts to cover up substance abuse while on duty.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The task force is modeled after the Justice Department\u2019s existing \u201cstrike force\u201d program, which uses interagency teams of investigators and prosecutors to target areas with high potential for fraud or abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new task force announcement was accompanied by a list of 13 separate investigations involving crimes against veterans and VA policies in recent months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They include manslaughter charges against a former Arkansas VA pathologist who falsified records to cover up his on-duty substance abuse problems;
