Joni Ernst of Iowa<\/a> and Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia \u2014 asked VA Secretary Robert Wilkie to outline the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2019\/09\/12\/va-investigating-sexual-assaults-at-west-virginia-hospital\/\" target=\"_blank\">sexual assault convictions<\/a> against department workers in recent years, as well as detail oversight policies for contractors and response procedures for reports of such assaults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRecent incidents indicate that there may be lingering issues within VA policies, procedures and system that must be resolved,\u201d the pair wrote. \u201cWe are disturbed by these allegations and feel it is essential that we understand better what the VA is doing to address the problems and prevent them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/09\/26\/lawmaker-demands-overhaul-of-va-anti-harassment-policies-after-staffer-reports-assault-at-veterans-hospital\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/DSC_6403.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Lawmaker demands overhaul of VA anti-harassment policies after staffer reports assault at veterans hospital<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A staffer from a congressional task force on women veterans was attacked during a medical visit to the facility.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September, federal authorities announced they were investigating allegations of multiple sexual assaults against VA patients at a West Virginia department hospital. VA officials have said that an employee was fired over the allegations, but have not released further details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Days after that news, a San Diego area physician working with VA pled guilty to assaulting and exploiting five female patients referred to him by department health officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And about a week after that, a House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee staffer said she was harassed and assaulted by a patient at the Washington, D.C. VA medical center. That prompted calls from the committee chairman for a full review of all sexual harassment and assault policies throughout department locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Women make up about 10 percent of the nation\u2019s veterans population, 17 percent of current military personnel and 30 percent of military service academy students. The number of women using VA health services has more than tripled over the last two decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/05\/02\/task-force-to-highlight-forgotten-and-invisible-women-veterans\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/5245556.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Task force to highlight \u2018forgotten\u2019 and &#8216;invisible\u2019 women veterans<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A new House task force will look at the challenges facing women veterans at VA an in society at large.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Advocates have said that VA has struggled to keep up with that changing demographic, leading to uneven services across department health care locations and unclear policies related to harassment and assault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But VA leaders have said they are making steady improvements, and have made addressing those issues a top priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The senators have asked for a formal response to their questions by the end of next week.
