{"id":46350,"date":"2016-04-28T19:12:37","date_gmt":"2016-04-28T19:12:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2016\/04\/28\/oakley-s-new-war-fighter-inspired-eyewear-has-been-interpreted-on-longboards\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T08:46:29","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T08:46:29","slug":"oakley-s-new-war-fighter-inspired-eyewear-has-been-interpreted-on-longboards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/off-duty\/gearscout\/2016\/04\/28\/oakley-s-new-war-fighter-inspired-eyewear-has-been-interpreted-on-longboards\/","title":{"rendered":"Oakley&#8217;s new war fighter-inspired eyewear has been interpreted on longboards"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those shady masters of eye protection at Oakley are gearing up to launch a new line of war fighter-inspired sunglasses leading into\u00a0Memorial Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the new specs,\u00a0Oakley commissioned\u00a0legendary military artist James Dietz to create sketches of three iconic weapons\u00a0to pair up with three\u00a0of\u00a0Dietz&#8217;\u00a0paintings depicting scenes from some of the bloodiest battles in three\u00a0eras of\u00a0military history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The artwork is integrated in\u00a0the eyewear line, with the sketches on the inside of the frames and the battle prints part of the holder\u00a0bags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then\u00a0Oakley\u00a0went one better \u2014\u00a0three better, actually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each of those battle scenes and weapons have also been emblazoned on custom-built <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kotalongboards.com\/\">KOTA<\/a> longboards. Such top-and-bottom configurations would be impossible on most longboards, because graphic-obscuring grip tape is needed on the top side. KOTA, however, has carved out a name for itself in the longboard industry with its patented, super-grippy-yet-see-through finish that allows for graphics on both sides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Oakley is such a great company we were honored and flattered when they contacted us to design these boards,&#8221; Maloney says. But when Oakley sent the artwork, he was a bit skeptical.\u00a0The full-body illustrations went against the grain of KOTA&#8217;s usual wood-showcasing designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though it&#8217;s rare for KOTA\u00a0to cover an entire deck with a vinyl print like on the Oakley boards, it&#8217;s not unique. MultiCam boards for Crye Precision were made the same way. With artwork by James Dietz, the one-of-a-kind boards are a partnership between Oakley and KOTA Longboards.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>Photo Credit: Courtesy of KOTA Longboards<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It was a challenge to translate them to large format for printing while maintaining the integrity and quality of James&#8217; original artwork.\u00a0It took a great deal of work, but I&#8217;m very pleased with the result \u2014\u00a0and hope James is, too,&#8221; Maloney says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drew Wallace, a\u00a0former Army Ranger at Oakley who helped manage the eyewear project, said he &#8220;couldn&#8217;t be happier to partner with so many great folks who care about the boys.&#8221; He had known\u00a0of\u00a0Dietz&#8217;s artwork through the Rangers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;James did a number of paintings for the Regiment that hang in our HQ. I was always very personally moved by his depictions.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oakley will use the longboards as promotional items and plans to find deserving homes for them\u00a0through a giveaway on Instagram.
