{"id":48021,"date":"2018-12-24T18:04:26","date_gmt":"2018-12-24T18:04:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/12\/24\/heres-how-veterans-have-saved-at-least-4-million-shopping-at-the-online-exchange\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T09:26:01","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T09:26:01","slug":"heres-how-veterans-have-saved-at-least-4-million-shopping-at-the-online-exchange","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/pay-benefits\/2018\/12\/24\/heres-how-veterans-have-saved-at-least-4-million-shopping-at-the-online-exchange\/","title":{"rendered":"Here\u2019s how veterans have saved at least $4 million shopping at the online exchange"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans have spent more than $60 million at their online military exchange since the new benefit was launched more than a year ago, officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new veteran benefit was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2017\/01\/12\/defense-officials-approve-expanded-veterans-online-shopping-benefit\/\" target=\"_blank\">approved by the Defense Department <\/a>in 2017 \u2014 for online shopping only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sales at the <a href=\"http:\/\/shopmyexchange.com\/\" target=_blank>ShopMyExchange.com<\/a> site operated by the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) have increased by more than 12 percent compared to the same period last year, said AAFES spokesman Chris Ward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans can also shop at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mynavyexchange.com\/\" target=_blank>www.mynavyexchange.com<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/shopcgx.com\/\" target=_blank>www.shopcgx.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any veteran can shop at any of the online stores, regardless of their branch of service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AAFES \u201cis highly encouraged by the response from authorized veteran shoppers,\u201d Ward said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And since the new benefit was launched, veterans have saved more than $4 million in sales taxes alone with their purchases at the AAFES site, where online shopping remains tax free, Ward said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIncreased online sales are playing a role in overall earnings increases at the Army and Air Force Exchange Service,\u201d Ward said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tom Shull, chief executive officer of AAFES, formally proposed the idea to DoD of expanding the online benefit to honorably discharged veterans in May 2014, noting that it would provide a modest benefit to those who had served but left the military short of retirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also helps the military by generating more profits than normally would be raked in, and those dollars help fund morale, welfare and recreation programs for troops and their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/management\/pay-benefits\/2017\/07\/18\/lone-survivor-duo-luttrell-wahlberg-spread-word-on-veterans-online-exchange-benefit\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/wahlberg-luttrell.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">&#8216;Lone Survivor&#8217; duo Luttrell, Wahlberg spread word on veterans&#8217; online exchange benefit<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A video featuring actor Mark Wahlberg and former Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell  promoting the new veterans\u2019 online shopping benefit is fast approaching the most viewed video in the history of the Army and Air force Exchange Service. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, more than 400,000 veterans have registered to shop through ShopMyExchange.com.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of those, 75,000 have placed an order at <a href=\"http:\/\/shopmyexchange.com\/\" target=_blank>ShopMyExchange.com<\/a> \u2013 generating a total of 260,000 sales worth $60 million, Ward said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy Exchange Service Command officials don\u2019t track how many purchases veterans make, or other general information about their spending but officials have recorded an 8 percent hike in sales on the <a href=\"http:\/\/mynavyexchange.com\/\" target=_blank>myNavyExchange.com<\/a> website, spokeswoman Kristine Sturkie said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NEXCOM currently has 85,000 veteran <a href=\"http:\/\/mynavyexchange.com\/\" target=_blank>myNavyExchange.com<\/a> account holders, she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Top 10 veterans online shopping benefit categories for AAFES&#8217;
