Well, maybe not so simple.<br\/><br\/>Maybe you\u2019ve noticed those incredible #vanlife-tagged photos on Instagram. From renovated old Volkswagen\u00a0Westfalia campers and EuroVans to the big passenger and cargo vans creatively converted for roughing it comfortably, <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">there is <\/span>\u200ba rolling renaissance is underway in small, self-contained homes away from home.<br\/><br\/>For current and former troops alike, getting behind the wheel of one of these vehicles often means a chance to reconnect with the country and the great outdoors while also decompressing from the tribulations of service through the vicissitudes of travel.<br\/><br\/>&#8220;Being in nature in general is an incredibly necessary and cathartic experience for veterans. It provides crucial time for much-needed introspection,&#8221; Jenkins says.<br\/><br\/><span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Even better when you\u2019re not feeling like you\u2019re on another deployment or training exercise to do it.<\/span>\u200b<br\/><br\/><strong>Expeditionary vehicle<\/strong><br\/><br\/>More like\u00a0small live-aboard boats on wheels, these vehicles pack much of what you\u2019d typically find in any modern RV <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">\u2013 <\/span>\u200b\u2014\u00a0bedroom, kitchen, lounge, storage<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">,<\/span>\u200b and even rudimentary showers and bathrooms in some \u2014\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">\u2013<\/span>\u200ball packed into the tiniest of spaces.<br\/><br\/>Indeed, if RVs are the luxurious land yachts of the highways and campgrounds, these are the rough-and-ready road trawlers of the <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">bi-ways, <\/span>\u200bbyways, beaches and roads less traveled, <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">While they may not be the snazziest vehicle you\u2019ll ever see \u2013 though many are remarkable works of automotive craftsmanship \u2013 they are <\/span>\u200bengineered for ranging far and roughing it in style.<br\/><br\/>And because of their smaller, <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">more <\/span>\u200bnimbler size, they are able to go more places and offer greater flexibility than their larger <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">more cumbersome <\/span>\u200bcousins ever could.<br\/><br\/>For Straub\u00a0and her husband, a\u00a0Navy officer, getting a 1997 VW EuroVan last year <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">meant giving <\/span>\u200bgave them a chance\u00a0to connect before his deployment to Djibouti. Stationed on Whidbey Island near Seattle, the <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">couple were both <\/span>\u200bavid backpackers found camping problematic after\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">but since <\/span>\u200bthe birth of their now-3<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">-three<\/span>\u200b-year-old daughter<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">, Nora, camping had become problematic<\/span>\u200b. The van provided a perfect solution.<br\/><br\/>&#8220;Before he left, we did a two-week road trip down the coast to northern California and then back up through central Oregon. When we wanted to stop, we just found a spot by the ocean or some state park. It was great not having to worry about hotels and just going wherever we wanted to go. There\u2019s a little sink.<br\/><br\/>With a bed built into the back, it\u2019s all just big enough to fit the family of three and their dog<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> Buddy<\/span>\u200b.<br\/><br\/>After her husband deployed, mother and daughter continued to explore <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">with trips throughout <\/span>\u200bthe region, <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">ranging <\/span>\u200bfrom<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> expeditions up<\/span>\u200b Mount Rainier to winter camping on remote Neah Bay\u00a0along Washington state&#8217;s <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">State\u2019s <\/span>\u200bwatery border with Canada.<br\/><br\/>&#8220;The weather was freezing on that trip, but that propane heater worked amazingly well. It was so nice to be able to go out in the middle of winter and be able to cook and sleep comfortably and still feel like we were camping.&#8221;<br\/><br\/><strong>The new nomads<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> New Nomads<\/span>\u200b<\/strong><br\/><br\/>For veterans\u00a0already adept at moving<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> working at the move<\/span>\u200b, living in tight spaces, and adapting technology to a mobile life, even a modestly equipped van can mean <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">finding <\/span>\u200ba <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">complete <\/span>\u200blifestyle in stripped-down simplicity<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">.<\/span>\u200b \u2014\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">That is, making van life <\/span>\u200ba full-time life of traveling and exploring.<br\/><br\/>It\u2019s what Jenkins calls &#8220;embracing the art of nomadicity,&#8221;<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> &#8212;\u00a0the new normal of anywhere computing that,<\/span>\u200b in which the <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">the <\/span>\u200bright person with the right mindset<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">,<\/span>\u200b can <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">mean <\/span>\u200btruly live anywhere<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> living<\/span>\u200b. Even in the back of a van.<br\/><br\/>&#8220;It is often romanticized on social media<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">,<\/span>\u200b but is not all picturesque sunsets and frolicking with sloths. It can be downright grimy at times, but that can be amazing as well, if you maintain the proper perspective,&#8221; Jenkins says.<br\/><br\/>Jenkins left the Army in 2007 in search of a new perspective, eventually becoming an entrepreneur and building a successful gym and fitness business in Denver.<br\/><br\/>\u00a0<br\/><br\/><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"635995810038545529-IMG-5392.JPG\" data-alignment=\"center\" data-object-id=\"00000156-3bcf-d61b-a9d6-7bef97e70000\" data-type=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/snagfilms-a.akamaihd.net\/84\/17\/1adfbd154a3099978dea7fd1e4ba\/635995810038545529-img-5392jpg\"\/><figcaption> <span>&#8220;We don\u2019t really look at this as a trip, rather a lifestyle,&#8221; says Leo Jenkins. &#8220;We could have a steady home anywhere in the world and accomplish our career goals, but that isn\u2019t who we are. Experiencing all the world has to offer is our priority.&#8221;<\/span><\/figcaption><figcaption> <span>Photo Credit: Courtesy of Leo Jenkins<\/span><\/figcaption>He wanted to travel more, so in <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Feb. <\/span>\u200bFebruary 2014, he sold everything he owned that wouldn\u2019t fit into his backpack and hit the road, first bouncing around Central America to surf and explore, then hitchhiking and hopping coal trains across the United States with an old military buddy, and eventually landing in Alaska with the intention of buying an old van and driving back down to <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">central American <\/span>\u200bCentral America.<br\/><br\/>But first<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">,<\/span>\u200b he wanted to make a detour to the Dakotas so he could scratch off the last two states on his beer-drinking bucket list to knock back a cold one in all <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">fifty <\/span>\u200b50\u00a0states.<br\/><br\/>Within 24 hours, he bought an old red Dodge 2500 van with 80,000 miles on it<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">,<\/span>\u200b \u2014\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">but <\/span>\u200band a bed already built into the back<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">,<\/span>\u200b \u2014\u00a0for $5,000. He named his new ride Falcor and\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">He <\/span>\u200bwas on his way south the same day.<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> He named his new ride Falcor.<\/span>\u200b<br\/><br\/>Soon<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">,<\/span>\u200b he added <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">adds <\/span>\u200ba few special modifications<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> of his own<\/span>\u200b, including <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">a full <\/span>\u200bsolar <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">system <\/span>\u200bpower, refrigerator, stove, roof rack, cargo box, pull<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">&#8211;<\/span>\u200bup bar, awning and more.<br\/><br\/>\u00a0<br\/><br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jenkins<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bJenkins&#8217;\u00a0name sounds familiar, you might recognize it from his first two books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b&#8221;Lest We Forget<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b&#8221; is a memoir about his deployments as a medic in the 75th Ranger Regiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b&#8221;On Assimilation<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b&#8221; follows the struggle that comes with reintegrating back into civilian life. His was also featured in the documentary &#8220;Nomadic Veterans.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His third book, &#8220;First Train Out of Denver,&#8221; just released in April, was written from that van he bought in Alaska, which he\u2019s been living in for the past 20 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I love writing from the road,&#8221; he says. &#8220;I am helping an Army EOD veteran, Mary Dauge, write her book from the road now.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\u2019s also working on two more books of his own, one of which is already titled &#8220;Ten Ways to Go Nomad.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It&#8217;s 10 different in-depth case studies of how people afford a full-time life on the road as well as their story. I have a nomadic tattoo artist, nomadic designer, nomadic corporate investigator, nomadic filmmaker, nomadic students, nomadic fitness\/wellness instructors, and a few others,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of those case studies could very well be Navy veteran Morgan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Building the boat<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After eight years in the military as a wrench-turner on Navy jets, with deployments to more than a dozen countries across the Mediterranean and the Middle East, you might think Navy veteran Morgan would have had\u00a0enough of traveling for a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I kept meeting these people overseas, and they\u2019d ask\u00a0me what it&#8217;s\u00a0like at Yosemite or some other national treasure, and I was ashamed to admit I\u2019d never been to them,&#8221; he says. &#8220;I decided I needed to go see these meccas and experience what it was I\u2019d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">been<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bactually been defending.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About a year<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">for his enlisted<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bbefore his enlistment\u00a0was up, he bought a<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1995<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b15-passenger 1995 Chevy Sportvan G20 for $3,500.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It was an old, ugly white van with 122,000 miles on it<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b but ran perfectly.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He spent about $1,500 installing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">a<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bsolar<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">system<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200band building his own bed, kitchen and cabinet system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I did all the work myself, because if you build the boat, you can fix the boat.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He named his new vessel<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bVanawhite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"896\" height=\"503\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635995800929588749-rob-moran-with-vanawhitejpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7459\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635995800929588749-rob-moran-with-vanawhitejpg.jpg 896w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635995800929588749-rob-moran-with-vanawhitejpg.jpg?resize=300,168 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635995800929588749-rob-moran-with-vanawhitejpg.jpg?resize=768,431 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 896px) 100vw, 896px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>Navy veteran Rob Morgan with his home on wheels for the past 10 months.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>Photo Credit: Courtesy of Rob Morgan<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He spent his final months in the Navy taking weekend shakedown trips to test different configurations. When his last day finally arrived on Aug. 11, he was headed south to San Diego in search of all the best surfing spots along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It took me three months to get there because every day, there was a new amazing discovery. I was finding breaks that aren\u2019t even on most maps. I surfed with whales breaching next to me on the Oregon coast, sea otters popping up trying to figure what the hell I was, entire herds of deer passing by on the beach behind me as I paddle out,&#8221; Morgan says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ten months<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b\u2014\u00a0and 27,000 miles \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200blater, he\u2019s still living on the road. He\u2019s crisscrossed most of the western states, backpacking the national parks while learning how to rock climb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I\u2019ve always been deathly afraid of heights, but at one point I decided I didn\u2019t want to live in fear like that, so I walked into Camp 4 in Yosemite, which has some of the best climbing in the country, with a case of PBR and a bottle of whiskey<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whiskey<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200band asked if anyone could teach me how to rock climb.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before long, he was on his way to other iconic climbing locales with a caravan of his fellow &#8220;van dwellers&#8221; to continue his training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It\u2019s been truly amazing to see how the van community looks after and takes care of each other. It\u2019s not necessarily a long-term lifestyle, but doing this is without a doubt the best decision I\u2019ve ever made.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To sustain himself, he\u2019s taken odd jobs along the way and is now back in Washington state<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">State<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bworking as a backcountry wilderness ranger<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wilderness Ranger<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bfor the<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bForest Service, helping patrol Olympic National Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;You don\u2019t need a lot of money to do this. About $500 a month is plenty if you&#8217;re not<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">you<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bdriving a lot, much less if<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">your<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200byou&#8217;re\u00a0hunkered down for a while and not spending as much on gas.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A never-ending story<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now engaged, Jenkins says he has no plans to settle down anytime soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We started traveling in and living out of Falcor within less than six months of meeting each other. She crossed nine international borders<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">in<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bwith me in the first year of our relationship. Sure we fight, but living in a tiny home forces us to work it out. There is no going to another room to cool off and ignore each other with the TV on. It\u2019s not easy, but we are better for it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Jenkins continues to write and work on other projects from the road, his fianc\u00e9 is completing her<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">masters<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bmaster&#8217;s degree through a distance-learning program with Columbia University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hardest part, he says, is just keeping things organized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Two people with a half-dozen hobbies each living in a 38-square-foot domicile will turn your life into a Rubik\u2019s Cube. Move the climbing gear to access the cupboard, to move the pots and pans, to get to the cup, just so you can get a drink of water. Now the climbing gear is in the way of where you keep your extra surfboard fins, which now you need. Put the pots away first, though. Everything is a process. It has been an amazing tool for me, though. The process forces me to focus on my patience.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\u2019s not sure when he\u2019ll stop. But it doesn\u2019t look like it\u2019ll be anytime soon. The couple just bought a new vehicle, a Ford F-350 with a camper, offering just a little more breathing room<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">that<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bthan Falcor provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8216;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They\u2019re on their way down to Mexico<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bfor a while<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">awhile<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200band then back up through the U.S. to promote his book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We don\u2019t really look at this as a trip, rather a lifestyle,&#8221; he says. &#8220;We could have a steady home anywhere in the world and accomplish our career goals, but that isn\u2019t who we are.
