{"id":51468,"date":"2017-04-30T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-04-30T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2017\/04\/30\/monument-honoring-vietnam-helicopter-crews-approved-for-arlington-cemetery\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T10:12:05","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T10:12:05","slug":"monument-honoring-vietnam-helicopter-crews-approved-for-arlington-cemetery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/military-honor\/2017\/04\/30\/monument-honoring-vietnam-helicopter-crews-approved-for-arlington-cemetery\/","title":{"rendered":"Monument honoring Vietnam helicopter crews approved for Arlington Cemetery"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s been three years in the making, but helicopter crews who flew during the Vietnam War will have their own monument at Arlington National Cemetery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association and Arlington National Cemetery worked together on a compromise, and Congress introduced the Vietnam Helicopter Crew Monument Act to support the mission. The\u00a02 1\/2-foot by 2 1\/2-foot monument\u00a0will be placed in Section 35 along Memorial Drive, not far from the Tomb of the Unknowns, in the Virginia cemetery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Bob Hesselbein, who flew AH-1 Cobra gunships in Vietnam, helped spearhead the campaign for the memorial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In April 2014, Hesselbein, legacy committee chairman of the pilots association, and other members went to Arlington Cemetery to discuss donating a tree. Instead, one of the historians suggested donating a monument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We discovered that the greatest concentration of combat casualties who operated helicopters in the Vietnam War are in Arlington,&#8221; he told Military Times on Thursday.\u00a0 <br\/> <br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"4684\" height=\"3998\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/vietnam-helicopter-monument.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-94930\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/vietnam-helicopter-monument.jpg.jpg 4684w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/vietnam-helicopter-monument.jpg.jpg?resize=300,256 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/vietnam-helicopter-monument.jpg.jpg?resize=768,656 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/vietnam-helicopter-monument.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,874 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/vietnam-helicopter-monument.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,1311 1536w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/vietnam-helicopter-monument.jpg.jpg?resize=2048,1748 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 4684px) 100vw, 4684px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>The Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association will donate this monument to Arlington National Cemetery.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>Photo Credit: Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>The association members completed the lengthy application process before the end of 2014, but the cemetery&#8217;s advisory committee was deadlocked 3-3 on the proposal. <br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tiebreaker went to then-Army Secretary John McHugh, who decided to not move forward with the original monument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The prime directive for the cemetery is to do everything it can not to initiate an action that would displace an otherwise-eligible veteran,&#8221; McHugh told  <a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/4495714\/vietnam-war-helicopter-memorial\/\" target=\"_blank\">Time magazine<\/a> in 2016. &#8220;On a very tough decision, that philosophy and unwritten rule was the determining factor.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McHugh said the association could donate the tree, as originally intended, but Hesselbein said just having the tree marker didn&#8217;t give justice to those who lost their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association members sought action from Congress, and through publicity and nationwide support from the community, the Vietnam Helicopter Crew Monument Act was introduced. Sens. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., and Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska,  <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sullivan.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/sullivan-baldwin-introduce-bill-to-honor-vietnam-helicopter-crews\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: https:\/\/www.sullivan.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/sullivan-baldwin-introduce-bill-to-honor-vietnam-helicopter-crews\">introduced the bipartisan legislation<\/a>. Companion legislation was introduced on the House side by Rep. Mark Amodei, R-Nev.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Baldwin told Army Times that she was moved by Hesselbein&#8217;s stories of his own experiences during Vietnam, including &#8220;stories\u00a0of his friends and comrades that he still knows and those that he lost,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"3000\" height=\"2007\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/hueys-in-vietnam.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-94933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/hueys-in-vietnam.jpg.jpg 3000w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/hueys-in-vietnam.jpg.jpg?resize=300,201 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/hueys-in-vietnam.jpg.jpg?resize=768,514 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/hueys-in-vietnam.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,685 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/hueys-in-vietnam.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,1028 1536w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/hueys-in-vietnam.jpg.jpg?resize=2048,1370 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 3000px) 100vw, 3000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>The Vietnam War was known as the &#8220;helicopter war&#8221; because the United States relied heavily on the aircraft to transport troops and provide close-air support.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>Photo Credit: The Associated Press<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>A monument that honors the Vietnam-era helicopter crews is important not only for family members who visit Arlington Cemetery to see their loved ones, but also for those who aren&#8217;t directly impacted. <br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a teachable moment,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It gets people involved and gets people to understand the story of the helicopter pilots and crew members killed during the Vietnam War.&#8221; <br\/> <br\/>Staff from Arlington National Cemetery met with members of the pilot association in March, and the two parties were able to agree on the size of the memorial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hesselbein said thousands of people contacted members of Congress to show their support for the monument, which the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association is funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He recognizes that the primary mission of the cemetery is to provide grave space for American heroes who died, but the secondary mission is to be a national shrine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tourists who visit Arlington don&#8217;t necessarily go there to look at the graves but to see the Tomb of the Unknowns and other memorials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;People need to create memorials and monuments to honor those who give the ultimate sacrifice,&#8221; Hesselbein said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/> <i>Charlsy Panzino covers the Guard and Reserve, training, technology, operations and features for Army Times and Air Force Times.
