VA officials did not provide any immediate comment on the White House decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Numerous lawmakers have been pushing for the move for days, calling it a necessary step to protect already anxious and suffering veterans. On Tuesday, Senate Veteran\u2019s Affairs Committee Chairman Jerry Moran, R-Kan., and ranking member Jon Tester, D-Mont., petitioned Wilkie to grant waivers for a host of benefits filing deadlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Department of Veterans Affairs has broad authority to waive many required deadlines under the law and we believe the current crisis warrants liberal provision of such waivers,\u201d the pair wrote in a letter to the secretary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under current VA rules, veterans or veterans service organizations typically face tight deadlines for disability benefits applications to protest decisions or appeal rulings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tester and Moran have pushed for a suspension of all such deadlines for 180 days, and for all new benefits filings to have an effective date of March 31, 2020, so veterans aren\u2019t penalized for unforeseen delays in processing appropriate forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe hope we can continue working together ensuring veterans are not faced with an unfair choice: risking their health or receiving their benefits,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Thursday night, veterans advocates offered cautious praise for Trump\u2019s announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/04\/02\/coronavirus-recession-isolation-could-hit-veterans-harder-than-most-report\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6156847.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Coronavirus recession, isolation could hit veterans harder than most: report<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A new report from the Bob Woodruff Foundation warns that more resources targeted at veterans will be needed in coming weeks and months.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe must lighten the financial burden of veterans by suspending VA debt collections in the same way (the government) did for U.S. Treasury and U.S. Department of Education (debts),\u201d officials from Veterans Education Success wrote in a Twitter post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile we\u2019re hopeful, there are many outstanding questions.
