That figure is up nearly 7 percent from Monday, 59 percent in the last two weeks and 120 percent in the last 30 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The number of inpatients receiving focused medical care related to coronavirus complications has also spiked in recent weeks. On Tuesday, VA officials reported the total had passed 700. During the first week of October, the number was 340 patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2020\/11\/10\/amid-pandemic-veterans-affairs-secretary-sees-reason-for-both-optimism-and-worry\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP20189717783094.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Amid pandemic, Veterans Affairs secretary sees reason for both optimism and worry<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">In an interview with Military Times, VA Secretary Robert Wilkie defended the department&#039;s response to coronavirus thus far as better than many had predicted.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sharp increases in coronavirus levels come amid record-high case totals across the country in recent weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Wednesday, the total new cases in the United States reached 145,000, the highest mark since the start of the pandemic in America eight months ago. More than 10 million Americans \u2014 about one in every 330 citizens \u2014 has tested positive for the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an interview with Military Times on Monday, VA Secretary Robert Wilkie said the increased rate of infections within the VA health care system is inevitable if the virus numbers in the rest of the country continues to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur veterans don\u2019t live in a cocoon \u2026 where you can block yourself off from the rest of the world. They live in the communities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re not immune from what happens in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, VA officials have said that they do not view active case counts as a fair reflection of the department\u2019s coronavirus response. They instead insist that the hospitalization rate among infected veterans \u2014 which has remained stable for several months \u2014 is a better marker to gauge success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The active coronavirus cases are spread out over 139 VA medical centers across the country. Of those, 137 have seen at least one death connected to the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 240,000 Americans have died from complications related to the virus in the last eight months. Among VA patients, at least 4,254 veterans have succumbed to the illness. Of that total, more than 1,000 of the deaths have come in the last two months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roughly 5 percent of VA patients who test positive for the virus have eventually died from health complications related to the infection. That figure is significantly above the roughly 3 percent death rate among all Americans infected by the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2020\/05\/21\/suicide-risk-for-veterans-could-grow-as-coronavirus-crisis-winds-down\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"216\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6148209.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Suicide risk for veterans could grow as coronavirus crisis winds down<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Mental health experts warn that feelings of depression and anxiety will likely outlast the immediate isolation of the pandemic.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, VA officials have discouraged comparing their patient population to the rest of the country, noting the increased dangers the virus presents to individuals who are elderly and infirm, two descriptors that encompass many of the department\u2019s patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans Affairs officials have conducted more than 913,000 coronavirus tests since the start of the pandemic. Wilkie said he does not see a need for increased testing among patients, even amid the latest nationwide spike in cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere has to be a reason for a test: if you don\u2019t feel well, if you\u2019re going to have surgery, that kind of thing,\u201d he said. \u201cRight now, I don\u2019t see a change in our procedures.
