{"id":52149,"date":"2015-05-12T15:01:35","date_gmt":"2015-05-12T15:01:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2015\/05\/12\/report-vets-job-expectations-may-be-unrealistic\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T10:23:30","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T10:23:30","slug":"report-vets-job-expectations-may-be-unrealistic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/education-transition\/2015\/05\/12\/report-vets-job-expectations-may-be-unrealistic\/","title":{"rendered":"Report: Vets&#8217; job expectations may be unrealistic"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans&#8217; post-service employment problems may have as much to do with their own unrealistic civilian job expectations as their new employers&#8217; unfamiliarity with the military, according to new research released Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Faced with having to start from the bottom or entry-level positions, (veterans) often became very frustrated,&#8221; the report states. &#8220;In some cases, these clients are willing to risk homelessness before taking one of these lower-paying jobs.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study, conducted by Volunteers of America and the University of Southern California&#8217;s School of Social Work, also found veterans&#8217; &#8220;continuation of military identity&#8221; as a major barrier to integration into civilian workplaces, creating an unspoken barrier between themselves and nonveterans with a different work ethic and habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers paired those findings with a host of well-publicized post-military struggles \u2014 mental health issues, stigmas surrounding military service, skills translation and credentialing problems \u2014 to recommend better transition resources, especially for individuals with service injuries or less-than-honorable discharges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;You have a lot of veterans who are doing well getting jobs, but some aren&#8217;t doing so well.
