Desmond Doss&#8217; heroism on Hacksaw Ridge became the\u00a0stuff of Hollywood, Doss himself appeared\u00a0on camera to tell his tale \u2026 and\u00a0drive a filmmaker crazy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>&#8220;The first week I interviewed Desmond\u00a0for the documentary\u00a0\u2013\u00a0these weren&#8217;t\u00a0just hourlong\u00a0interviews,\u00a0they were\u00a0eight, sometimes\u00a0as long\u00a0as 10 hours\u00a0a day \u2013 and\u00a0so about the\u00a0fifth day in, I\u00a0had grown a\u00a0little exasperated,\u00a0because\u00a0Desmond had told his story for decades,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">the same way,&#8221; said Terry Benedict,\u00a0whose documentary &#8221; <a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0302427\/?ref_=nm_knf_i2\" target=\"_blank\">The Conscientious\u00a0Objector<\/a>&#8221; came out in 2004. &#8220;He knew it\u00a0by rote. But it was very thin on detail, on\u00a0the emotional part. <br\/> <br\/>&#8220;I got a little testy with him on the\u00a0fifth day. He was sitting in his chair and I\u00a0remember he had his jacket on. I remember\u00a0I grabbed the lapels of his jacket\u00a0and I was in his face and I was saying,\u00a0&#8216;Desmond, you are the worst storyteller\u00a0of your story.&#8217; \u2026 I looked him in the eyes\u00a0and I told him, &#8216;I want you to tell the\u00a0story from your heart, not your head.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>&#8220;I&#8217;m thinking, &#8216;I just did something I\u00a0probably shouldn&#8217;t have done.&#8217; In the\u00a0time it took me to think that, he said,\u00a0&#8216;OK.&#8217; I had the cameraman roll the camera,\u00a0and he immediately teared up.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-smg-jwplayer-video\"><atype-video-jwplayer nostick=\"true\" playlisturl=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/playlists\/fCzRqMW8?tags=076044cc-72a0-483c-b7f3-6d49b5474b71\" aspectratio=\"16 \/ 9\" mute autostart=\"false\"><\/atype-video-jwplayer><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">&#8220;Hacksaw Ridge&#8221; stars Teresa Palmer and Vince Vaughn talk faith, conviction and the adversity that comes along<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Part of a generation famous for\u00a0keeping war stories to themselves, Doss\u00a0began opening up about his feelings\u00a0during a rescue operation on Okinawa in\u00a01945 that would become legend: Braving\u00a0enemy grenades, bullets and shells in\u00a0multiple firefights spanning weeks, the<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">young Army medic saved 75 lives and\u00a0 <a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/valor.militarytimes.com\/recipient.php?recipientid=650\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: http:\/\/valor.militarytimes.com\/recipient.php?recipientid=650\">earned the Medal of Honor<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>He did so, as Benedict&#8217;s title suggests,\u00a0as a conscientious objector whose\u00a0faith prohibited him\u00a0from taking up arms against the enemy.\u00a0Serving as a medic, the closest he&#8217;d\u00a0come to using a weapon, per his citation,\u00a0was at the end of his ordeal, when &#8220;he\u00a0bound a rifle stock to his shattered arm\u00a0as a splint and then crawled 300 yards\u00a0over rough terrain to the aid station.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>The recollections of Doss and others in his unit that made up the 2004\u00a0documentary would become a blueprint\u00a0for &#8220;Hacksaw Ridge,&#8221; the Hollywood\u00a0retelling of Doss&#8217; heroism directed by\u00a0Mel Gibson and starring Andrew Garfield\u00a0as the young soldier. Both Gibson and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Garfield are nominated for Academy\u00a0Awards, two of six categories in which\u00a0the film is represented \u2013 including best\u00a0picture. The film comes out Feb. 21 on DVD. <br\/> <br\/><\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-smg-jwplayer-video\"><atype-video-jwplayer nostick=\"true\" playlisturl=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/playlists\/fCzRqMW8?tags=44f7ccb2-eb08-4dc8-a6b9-297db7eed357\" aspectratio=\"16 \/ 9\" mute autostart=\"false\"><\/atype-video-jwplayer><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Official Trailer: Hacksaw Ridge from Lionsgate<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>Benedict said he&#8217;s pleased with the\u00a0recognition, but he&#8217;s more pleased to\u00a0have a project that satisfied a more\u00a0important audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>&#8220;There&#8217;s only two [men] living now that\u00a0I know of that were in the documentary,\u00a0that had shared war experiences with\u00a0Desmond,&#8221; Benedict said. &#8220;I talked to\u00a0them, they had gone to see &#8216;Hacksaw,&#8217;\u00a0and they were just so appreciative and\u00a0happy that Desmond&#8217;s story is being<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">told.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/> <b>THE BIG SCREEN<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>Benedict met Doss at a church summer\u00a0camp as a teenager, then again at a\u00a0series of Medal of Honor reunion events\u00a0in the 1990s, after Benedict had become\u00a0active in the entertainment industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>&#8220;Hollywood, I didn&#8217;t know they&#8217;d been\u00a0after him since 1945, when he got the\u00a0medal,&#8221; he said. &#8220;He&#8217;d always refused\u00a0because he&#8217;d been so concerned about\u00a0his character being compromised. Doss\u00a0died in 2006;\u00a0early tries at\u00a0movie deals\u00a0fell through\u00a0before Bill\u00a0Mechanic,\u00a0who&#8217;d been\u00a0brought onto\u00a0the documentary\u00a0as a\u00a0producer, brought on Gibson to direct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>Gibson&#8217;s style suits the subject, said\u00a0Benedict, who along with Mechanic\u00a0served as a producer on &#8220;Hacksaw\u00a0Ridge.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>&#8220;There&#8217;s sort of a graphic reality to his\u00a0storytelling,&#8221; Benedict said. &#8220;Our film is\u00a0a graphic film, but one of the things I&#8217;ve\u00a0always said is, the role of a medic is all\u00a0about the horrific, tragic carnage that\u00a0comes in war. There&#8217;s not a real sanitary\u00a0way to tell that story honestly and be<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">authentic. \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>&#8220;While there&#8217;s a lot of tragedy on the\u00a0battlefield, that&#8217;s where the heroism\u00a0comes in. Mel really walked the tightrope,\u00a0balancing the graphic nature of\u00a0war with the heroism of Desmond, and\u00a0the faith that it took Desmond to accomplish\u00a0what he accomplished.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>That faith would confound and anger\u00a0his fellow service members initially,\u00a0many of whom didn&#8217;t understand why\u00a0he wouldn&#8217;t take up arms or why he\u00a0wouldn&#8217;t train or perform other duties\u00a0on Saturdays, his faith&#8217;s day of rest. He would save many of\u00a0their lives in combat, some of them on\u00a0a particularly bloody May 5, 1945 \u2013 a\u00a0Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>&#8220;Desmond said, &#8216;Jesus said it was right\u00a0to do good on the Sabbath, and it&#8217;s right\u00a0for me to go up on the ridge, because I&#8217;m\u00a0serving,'&#8221; Benedict recalled. &#8220;That may\u00a0seem like splitting hairs, but for Desmond,\u00a0there&#8217;s a big difference between\u00a0going to work and serving.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The man behind a 2004 documentary on Pfc.
