Officials said the forum included \u201cveterans services organizations, those who serve caregivers, VA staff, congressional partners and actual caregivers who are participants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/03\/22\/plan-to-drop-thousands-of-caregivers-from-veterans-affairs-support-program-put-on-hold\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Presser1.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Plan to drop thousands of caregivers from Veterans Affairs program put on hold<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The move is a stunning turnaround for the department, which for months has maintained the moves are necessary.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA Secretary Denis McDonough referenced the meeting during testimony before the House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee the same day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re in constant communication with this committee staff and with your individual office staff about these issues,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd we\u2019ll make a determination as to whether we need to issue new regulations or take some other step for continuation of the program.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In late March, McDonough announced a halt on all expulsions from the program of \u201clegacy caregivers\u201d \u2014 post-9\/11 veterans who were admitted to the program before October 2020 \u2014 in a dramatic reversal of department plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since last fall, officials have been reviewing those approximately 20,000 families to see if they still qualify for the program (and its monthly stipend) under eligibility rules updated two years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA officials said their initial work found that nearly 90 percent of families would have been pushed out of the program under that review, a figure that McDonough called \u201ctoo high.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials have completed about 88 percent of the reassessments now, and expect to finish the rest in coming weeks. However, that information is being gathered to help shape future changes to the program, and will not be used to exclude individuals from the benefit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 33,000 veterans are currently enrolled in the program, designed to support and compensate full-time caregivers providing at-home assistance to severely wounded veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The stipends vary based on where veterans live, but generally hover around $3,000 a month for the most severely wounded individuals and $1,800 for others in need of around-the-clock care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA officials declined to release specifics of potential changes discussed at the meeting last week, calling it one of a series of planning events designed to improve the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe do not want to rush this process,\u201d officials said in a statement. \u201cOnce we feel we have gathered enough information, we will be in a better position to provide more detailed updates.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leadership from the Elizabeth Dole Foundation \u2014 one of the outside groups involved \u2014 wrote on social media that the meeting was positive and productive, but said no timeline was given for when new requirements or additional reviews may be announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least one major change is already in the works. Currently only veterans who served before 1976 or after 2001 are eligible for the benefit, but the program is scheduled to be open to all veterans starting this October, per orders from Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his testimony to lawmakers, McDonough acknowledged the stress the recent review placed on veterans\u2019 families and promised that future changes would not come as a \u201csurprise\u201d to caregivers or Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawmakers vowed they will be monitoring the issue in months to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We want to be as transparent as possible with this issue.
