Still a mystery is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/07\/15\/guilty-plea-in-poisoning-deaths-of-va-patients-still-leaves-lawsuits-lingering-questions\/\" target=\"_blank\">what provoked Reta Mays to commit the crimes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/07\/14\/former-va-health-worker-charged-with-multiple-murder-counts-accused-of-poisoning-patients-with-insulin\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mays pleaded guilty<\/a> last year to intentionally killing the patients with wrongful insulin injections at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg. She faces up to life in prison for each of seven counts of second-degree murder when she is sentenced Tuesday in federal court.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/07\/14\/former-va-health-worker-charged-with-multiple-murder-counts-accused-of-poisoning-patients-with-insulin\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/killernurse.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Former VA health worker pleads guilty to murdering seven patients with insulin poisoning<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The nursing assistant was fired in 2018 after concerns were raised by fellow hospital workers.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mays, 46, of Reynoldsville, admitted at a July plea hearing to injecting the veterans with unprescribed insulin while she worked overnight shifts at the northern West Virginia hospital between 2017 and 2018. Hospital officials reported the deaths to the VA inspector general and fired Mays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The motive of Mays, who served in the Army National Guard in a noncombat position in Iraq and Afghanistan, is still unclear. Then-U.S. Attorney Bill Powell had said authorities did not receive a \u201csatisfactory response\u201d to questions about the reasoning behind her actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among Mays\u2019 duties included measuring patients\u2019 vital signs and blood glucose levels. VA nursing assistants are not qualified or authorized to administer medication, including insulin, prosecutors said. Edgell, 84, Felix Kirk McDermott, 82, and a 96-year-old man identified only by his initials, W.A.H.; Navy veteran Robert Edge Sr., 82; Air Force veteran George Nelson Shaw Sr., 81; and Army and Air Force veteran Raymond Golden, 88.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not clear whether Mays admitted a connection to the death of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2020\/08\/20\/sixth-lawsuit-filed-in-deaths-at-west-virginia-va-hospital\/\" target=\"_blank\">Navy veteran Russell R. Posey Sr.<\/a>, 92. But in addition to her other pleas, she also pleaded guilty to one count of assault with intent to commit murder involving the death of \u201cveteran R.R.P.\u201d \u2014 Posey\u2019s initials. She faces up to 20 additional years on that count.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Separately, the federal government has agreed to the settlement of numerous lawsuits filed by veterans\u2019 families alleging a widespread system of failures at the hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The VA is responsible for 9 million military veterans. The agency\u2019s former director was fired in 2018 in the wake of a bruising ethics scandal and a mounting rebellion within the agency.
