We need them now and we\u2019re going to need them in the future. And we have a place for them in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grosso\u2019s comments came just a few days after the department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/AIRCOMMISSIONREPORT\/index.asp\" target=\"_blank\">released its recommendations<\/a> for the Asset and Infrastructure Review Commission, mandated by Congress to look at VA\u2019s footprint across America.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/03\/14\/dozens-of-va-medical-centers-slated-for-closure-total-rebuilds-under-new-infrastructure-plan\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6310214164_210cffd497_k.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Dozens of VA medical centers slated for closure, total rebuilds under new infrastructure plan<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The plan still must be reviewed by an independent commission and approved by Congress before changes start to go into effect.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the plan, the department would shut down 17 VA medical centers across 12 states, build 14 new ones, and revamp 18 others. More than 160 local community clinics would be shut down and replaced with other health care facilities, some in partnership with private-sector offices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In all, the number of VA facilities would grow from about 1,260 to 1,340. The changes would impact communities in nearly every state across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Grosso cautioned on Thursday that the recommendations are just a first draft of proposed changes, and that numerous steps have to be completed before any changes begin. An independent commission of outside advocates will spend the next year holding public hearings on the ideas before offering its own report, which will be reviewed by the White House and Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo matter what decisions are made, nothing is likely going to happen within the next five years,\u201d she said. \u201cSo even if employees are nervous, we\u2019re trying to let them know that nothing is imminent in their position.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Already, some employee groups have voiced concerns about the recommendations. Several locations where medical centers are slated for closure held rallies in recent days to protest the moves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Irma Westmoreland, vice president of National Nurses United, said the planned closures raise concerns about veterans\u2019 long-term access to care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe know if VA facilities close, veterans will be dumped into the fragmented, hard-to-navigate private sector, which threatens their well-being and their lives,\u201d she said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even before the announcement, officials from the American Federation of Government Employees insisted the changes will \u201cforce veterans to rely on uncoordinated, private, for-profit care\u201d and hurt VA workers already treating them.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/06\/11\/will-brac-for-va-lead-to-veterans-hospital-closures-or-building-more-clinics\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635629126840459867-us-veterans-hospitals-weigjpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Will \u2018BRAC for VA\u2019 lead to veterans hospital closures or building more clinics?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Department leaders are expected to announce the names of the new Asset and Infrastructure Review commissioners later this month.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grosso said VA officials believe the changes will benefit veterans overall, putting about 150,000 more veterans within a 30-minute drive for primary care and 200,000 within a 30-minute drive for mental health care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also called worries about the impact on VA workers premature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are a lot of options to be able to keep those employees,\u201d Grosso added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe can help move them to another location in the VA if they\u2019re interested, but I realize that for some that would mean changing homes. We also hope that we can leverage our telehealth capabilities and keep those people employed where they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The independent commission is expected to start its review of the recommendations in the coming weeks. Grosso said local leaders have been briefed on the specific changes planned for their communities, but officials are still collecting feedback on those ideas to help provide more information to the
