He said the decision came after White House officials informed him he was no longer being considered for the permanent post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDuring my nearly three years leading VHA, as both executive in charge and acting under secretary, I have enjoyed extraordinary support from both secretaries I have served,\u201d Stone said. \u201cI am deeply saddened by this decision but am confident that the great employees of VHA will continue to serve America\u2019s veterans with excellence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/05\/25\/zero-covid-deaths-among-veterans-affairs-patients-for-the-first-time-in-14-months\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6458798.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Zero COVID deaths among Veterans Affairs patients for the first time in 14 months<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">At least one death from the virus was reported by VA officials for 433 consecutive days.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a separate statement, VA Secretary Denis McDonough praised Stone for his work at VA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe owe Dr. Stone an immense debt of gratitude for his leadership, especially during the pandemic,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen COVID-19 first began to spread, Dr. Stone was among the first people veterans and their families heard from, delivering a simple and urgent message: \u2018We are going to be here [for you] just like we have been for the last 100 years.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUnder Dr. Stone\u2019s leadership, VHA\u2019s excellent employees have done exactly that \u2014 vaccinating millions, saving lives and risking everything to serve those who served our country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stone, who served as the Army\u2019s deputy surgeon general and deputy commanding general for Army Medical Command, first served at VA as the second-ranking health official under David Shulkin in 2016. He left when Shulkin became VA secretary, but returned again in 2018 to serve as the temporary head of VA\u2019s health operations under President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That temporary job became a near permanent post. In the last seven years, Shulkin is the only Senate-confirmed nominee to lead the VHA, and his stint in the job lasted only 18 months before his promotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stone has been rumored frequently as a nominee for the under secretary of health post, under President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/03\/03\/vas-next-medical-challenge-catching-up-on-millions-of-missed-veterans-appointments\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/dc75ae5877d4a2ad96099c6d86a43e2ac2af46ae-1.jpeg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA\u2019s next medical challenge: catching up on millions of missed veterans\u2019 appointments<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The department has delayed or cancelled more than 19 million medical appointments over the last year, but hopes to reschedule them in the months ahead.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In March, VA leaders announced they had formed a commission to identify candidates for the job.
