This map will show you"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans living in the western United States may benefit significantly more from this summer\u2019s new VA community care rules than their East Coast counterparts, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aei.org\/multimedia\/va-mission-act-access-map\/#themap\" target=_blank>a new map released by the American Enterprise Institute<\/a> this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project plots the location of more than 1,000 Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers and clinics and calculates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/01\/30\/new-va-plan-vets-facing-30-minute-drives-20-day-waits-for-appointments-could-get-private-sector-care-instead\/\" target=\"_blank\">a typical 30-minute drive from each<\/a>. That\u2019s one of several standards department officials will use to determine which veterans are eligible for taxpayer-funded health care outside the VA system, under expanded community care rules adopted by Congress last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/03\/28\/no-delay-for-new-veterans-community-care-rules-despite-concerns-from-advocates\/\" target=_blank>have not given specifics<\/a> on what areas of the country will be most affected by the changes, but have estimated the number of veterans eligible could jump from around 700,000 today to more than 2.7 million with the new rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/01\/31\/new-va-health-care-rules-trump-overreach-or-more-choice-for-vets\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/RYW32DW23VCERNJQSYTDCRN7KA.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">New VA health care rules: Trump overreach or more choice for vets?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Debate over how to expand veterans health care choices connects to larger national fights over the role of government and private-sector partnerships.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the 30-minute drive time provision has raised alarm among critics of the plan, who say it would expand the number of veterans in the outside care program even further than those estimates and shift resources away from core department needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rebecca Burgess, manager for AEI\u2019s Program on American Citizenship and a research fellow with the think tank, said the new map shows reason for those concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe critics are probably right to worry about the cost,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen you look at these drive times on the map, it leaves a lot of space around the country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much of the upper East Coast sits within a half-hour drive from VA medical facilities, which Burgess noted is a reminder of the age of many department buildings. Many of those centers were built in the early parts of the 20th century, before large population shifts to southern and western states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The map shows large swaths of California, Texas, Arizona and Florida outside the 30-minute drive window, even in counties with some of the highest veterans populations in the country. More rural states like North Dakota, Nebraska and Kansas have only a small fraction of their land masses covered under the map projections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AEI staffers compiled the map based on available VA data and open-source traffic pattern data.
