{"id":58400,"date":"2020-08-04T11:42:37","date_gmt":"2020-08-04T11:42:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/08\/04\/va-coronavirus-total-tops-40000-even-as-active-cases-decrease\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T12:12:30","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T12:12:30","slug":"va-coronavirus-total-tops-40000-even-as-active-cases-decrease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/veterans\/2020\/08\/04\/va-coronavirus-total-tops-40000-even-as-active-cases-decrease\/","title":{"rendered":"VA coronavirus total tops 40,000, even as active cases decrease"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Department of Veterans Affairs surpassed 40,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/07\/28\/more-than-2000-veterans-affairs-patients-have-now-died-from-coronavirus\/\" target=_blank>coronavirus cases<\/a> on Monday, but the number of active cases within the health system continued to decline since hitting a peak in late July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The total number of cases among the veterans health system\u2019s patients has grown by more than 10,000 in the last 19 days alone, as the virus outbreak has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/08\/03\/governors-ask-trump-to-extend-guard-coronavirus-support-missions-set-to-end-this-month\/\" target=_blank>spiked in hot spots around America<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/07\/20\/va-coronavirus-cases-top-6000-over-the-weekend-but-hospitalizations-remain-low\/\" target=_blank>Veterans Affairs officials<\/a> have repeatedly emphasized in recent weeks that they are seeing progress in combating the fast-spreading illness, with hospitalization rates down and patients recovering from the virus rising.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2020\/05\/21\/suicide-risk-for-veterans-could-grow-as-coronavirus-crisis-winds-down\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"216\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6148209.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Suicide risk for veterans could grow as coronavirus crisis winds down<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Mental health experts warn that feelings of depression and anxiety will likely outlast the immediate isolation of the pandemic.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The number of active cases among VA patients as of Monday evening was 5,574. That\u2019s down about 10 percent from two weeks ago, when the number of active cases topped 6,200 patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The total is still up about 33 percent from July 1 and more than 300 percent from June 1, when the department recorded its lowest levels of active cases (about 1,400) since the first few weeks of the pandemic in March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thirteen VA medical center sites are currently dealing with 100 or more active coronavirus cases. They include four in Florida (Orlando, Gainesville, Miami and Tampa), three in Texas (Harlingen, San Antonio and Houston), and two in South Carolina (Columbia and Charleston).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least 2,148 patients and 42 VA employees have died from complications related to the illness. That figure has grown at a slower rate than the active case count, but is still nearly double the total deaths recorded on June 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 5 percent of patients in VA care who contract the virus have eventually died from the illness, above the 3 percent death rate for cases among all Americans, according to the latest data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, VA officials have said the mortality data for their patients \u201ccannot be used to compare VA infection or mortality rates with the community because of differences in population risk, test availability, and follow-up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/06\/26\/grim-coronavirus-milestones-for-veterans-affairs-20000-cases-1500-deaths-in-the-last-100-days\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP20176013633466.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Grim COVID-19 milestones for Veterans Affairs: 20,000 cases, 1,500 deaths in the last 100 days<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Officials have seen a sharp rise in active coronavirus cases among patients in the last month.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 32,500 patients in the department\u2019s health system have recovered from the illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Monday, during a White House press conference, President Donald Trump praised the department\u2019s use of remote health care options since the start of the pandemic, allowing veterans to continue to receive health care despite access restrictions at many sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow telehealth is a critical part of our path forward in the VA,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is becoming a critical path, especially with our senior citizens. You don\u2019t have to go to the doctor\u2019s office, you don\u2019t have to go to hospitals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nationwide, about 4.6 million Americans have been
