However, those priorities must include adapting VA infrastructure and operations to climate risks,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2019\/05\/16\/elizabeth-warren-announces-plan-to-unravel-military-industrial-complex\/\" target=_blank>Sens. Elizabeth Warren<\/a> of Massachusetts and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2019\/06\/21\/senate-defense-bill-could-tackle-iran-border-wall-and-saudisbut-dont-count-on-it\/\" target=_blank>Brian Schatz<\/a> of Hawaii wrote in a letter to VA leadership today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStrengthening VA\u2019s resilience to climate change is consistent with the agency\u2019s mission to deliver timely, high-quality care and benefits to America\u2019s veterans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2018\/10\/30\/va-to-fast-track-benefits-appeals-for-hurricane-victims\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/AP_18264693371374.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA to fast-track benefits appeals for hurricane victims<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Veterans in counties hit hard by the fall hurricanes will see their cases advanced quickly in coming months.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lawmakers are asking for a comprehensive evaluation of the department\u2019s climate change preparation plans in the last five years, when officials in the last administration released reports on threats posed by future climate patterns to all government agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They noted that VA has released several updates on efforts to operate environmentally-friendly facilities, but did not include how altered weather patterns and extreme storms could hurt existing locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNatural disasters and extreme weather events have adversely affected VA infrastructure and operations at facilities across the country in recent years, including in Louisiana, Texas, New York, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, Virginia, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma and Puerto Rico,\u201d the letter stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of those referenced events are short-term closures of VA health facilities in the lead-up and aftermath of severe storms.
