{"id":60697,"date":"2019-10-08T19:57:45","date_gmt":"2019-10-08T19:57:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/10\/08\/va-refunds-400-million-in-mistaken-home-loan-fees\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T12:42:41","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T12:42:41","slug":"va-refunds-400-million-in-mistaken-home-loan-fees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/veterans\/2019\/10\/08\/va-refunds-400-million-in-mistaken-home-loan-fees\/","title":{"rendered":"VA refunds $400 million in mistaken home loan fees"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans Affairs officials have paid out more than $400 million in refunds of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/home-hq\/va-loan-center\/\" target=_blank>home loan funding fees<\/a> in the wake of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.benefits.va.gov\/homeloans\/purchaseco_loan_fee.asp\" target=_blank>an inspector general\u2019s report<\/a> that tens of thousands of veterans were improperly tagged with extra costs when applying for the loans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Department officials said they reviewed 130,000 cases over the summer to look for errors, which mostly involved simple clerical mistakes or disability ratings changes after veterans settled on their loans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under existing rules, veterans and service members must pay a VA funding fee when they apply for a VA home loan, with costs between 0.5 percent and 3.3 percent of total money lent. The money is designed to defray some administration costs for the department, but disabled veterans are exempt from the fee.<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link smg-interstitial-link--fallback wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.benefits.va.gov\/homeloans\/purchaseco_loan_fee.asp\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__fallback-link\">Thousands of disabled veterans may get refunds of VA home loan fees<\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, an inspector general report released earlier this year found that at least 53,000 disabled veterans had been charged the fees in recent years. VA officials announced in May they would review current and past loans, and contact veterans eligible for refunds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, VA Secretary Robert Wilkie said the effort stretched back as far as 20 years ago. \u201cOur administration prioritized fixing the problems and paid veterans what they were owed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The payout total was significantly above the nearly $290 million total investigators estimated earlier this year.
