{"id":61038,"date":"2018-08-16T19:32:09","date_gmt":"2018-08-16T19:32:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/08\/16\/mycaa-dods-popular-spouse-tuition-assistance-program-back-in-business\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T13:08:06","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T13:08:06","slug":"mycaa-dods-popular-spouse-tuition-assistance-program-back-in-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/pay-benefits\/2018\/08\/16\/mycaa-dods-popular-spouse-tuition-assistance-program-back-in-business\/","title":{"rendered":"MyCAA, DoD\u2019s popular spouse tuition assistance program, is back in business"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>This article has been updated to include additional information from DoD.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A popular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/pay-benefits\/mil-money\/2017\/12\/06\/military-spouse-scholarships-where-to-apply-and-how-to-find-more-cash-for-school\/\" target=_blank>military spouse tuition assistance program<\/a> is back online after a month\u2019s hiatus caused by technical problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2015\/01\/22\/mycaa-spouse-scholarship-program-may-be-underused\/\" target=_blank>My Career Advancement Account<\/a> program, commonly known as MyCAA, was officially restored at 9 p.m. Tuesday, said Eddy Mentzer, associate director for DoD military family readiness and well-being, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DoDMilSpouse\/\" target=_blank>DoD social media video<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The web address has changed to <a href=\"http:\/\/mycaa.militaryonesource.mil\/\" target=_blank>mycaa.militaryonesource.mil<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow that the site is back up, traffic is extremely heavy, and we are encountering no issues as we catch up on the backlog of calls,\u201d said DoD spokeswoman Jessica Maxwell. Officials are working with all spouses to address any issues they may have experienced as a result of the website\u2019s down time, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials moved the operation to a new platform, a new server and a new host, Mentzer said. The new setup appears to be stable, he said, and some spouses already have completed their financial assistance paperwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen we look at any type of outage, frankly, it\u2019s not acceptable,\u201d Mentzer said. \u201cWe\u2019ll work diligently in the future to make sure these types of circumstances don\u2019t happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s probably the worst time of year for something like this to happen, as thousands of military spouses around the world are preparing for the fall semester,&#8221; Mentzer said. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/spouse\/2018\/08\/07\/tech-problems-shut-down-dod-spouse-scholarship-program\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/V4HHMKBA2JBK3LCEDOGHBH3V5Y.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Tech problems shut down DoD spouse scholarship program<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">In the meantime, officials say they are working on a method to provide the function of the program over telephone while the website remains down.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s one technical issue that spouses should note, Maxwell said. If prompted for a certificate when going to the new website, simply hit \u201cCancel,\u201d to be taken to the MyCAA website where they can log in to they system. Officials are working to fix that issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MyCAA provides a maximum education benefit of $4,000, with an annual fiscal year cap of $2,000. Those eligible for the benefit are civilian spouses of active-duty members in paygrades E-1 to E-5, W-1 and W-2, and O-1 and O-2. Spouses whose service members are on Title 10 orders and who are within those paygrades are also eligible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scholarship can be used only to pursue licenses, credentials or associate degrees geared toward assisting spouses in their portable career paths. It doesn\u2019t cover bachelor\u2019s graduate or general-purpose associate degrees, nor can it be used for school-related costs outside tuition, such as books or room and board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before requesting financial assistance, spouses must develop an education and training plan detailing the courses or exams they plan to take to get their associate, certificate or credential. Information is available on the MyCAA web portal.
