Lee and his seriously bloodied Army of Northern Virginia the victors at Chancellorsville. Also today in history, in the U.S. and elsewhere: 1776:<\/b> Rhode Island declared independence from Great Britain, shaking the Empire to its very core. 1864:<\/b> The Army of the Potomac battles the Army of Northern Virginia (again) along the Rappahannock River. Maj. Gen. Benjamin F. Butler’s Army of the James, marching on the Confederate capital, encountered resistance from Richmond’s defenders under General P.G.T.
