Trent Kelly, R-Miss. and an Army reservist, sponsored the measure and called it a small but significant step towards recognizing the extra dangers some military jobs entail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe ask our warfighters to deploy into harm\u2019s way, and this minimal increase is just a step in the right direction to show that we support them,\u201d he said during committee debate on the measure. The proposal was adopted without any opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The increase would not apply to troops serving in hostile fire areas and combat zones. Those individuals are already eligible for up to $450 a month in extra pay.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/02\/19\/guardsmen-and-reservists-could-see-big-boosts-in-hazard-pay-education-benefits-under-new-plans\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/5923942.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Guardsmen and reservists could see big boosts in hazard pay, education benefits under new plans<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Plans to increase the part-time troops compensation have bipartisan support but an unclear path ahead.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Kelly said he hopes lawmakers will re-examine all of the hazard pay rules and amounts in coming months, to ensure the compensation given to those troops accurately reflects the dangers they face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senate lawmakers have not included a similar increase in their drafts of the annual defense authorization legislation, but have supported granting military hazard pay to active-duty and Guard troops performing coronavirus response missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawmakers are expected to reconcile the differing chamber drafts of the budget policy bill later this fall.
