Try getting to know yourself first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personal branding expert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lida360.com\/about\/#lida\" target=\"_blank\">Lida Citro\u00ebn<\/a> recently offered attendees of the <a href=\"https:\/\/rebootcamp.militarytimes.com\/news\/education\/2019\/01\/02\/this-huge-annual-student-vet-meeting-is-about-to-start\/\" target=\"_blank\">Student Veterans of America National Conference<\/a> practical tips on how to sell yourself to civilian recruiters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chief among them: \u201cBeing an expert on you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo hiring manager, no recruiter, no investor is going to spend the time to figure you out,\u201d Citro\u00ebn told Military Times in an interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Step 1: Understand your values and why they would make you an asset to a prospective employer.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Citro\u00ebn said this is about knowing yourself as an individual \u2014 who you are, not what you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many times, when she speaks to military audiences, people will automatically list their values according to what they\u2019ve been taught to embody in uniform, such as honor, duty and service. But she suggests thinking about these more specifically as a man or woman \u2014 not a service member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, if the broad value of service is attractive to you, frame this as \u201chelping others\u201d and think of specific ways you might be interested in doing so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen you can articulate your values, which is your why, and then match that up with your action &#8230; people with trust you. People will assign you credibility. People will refer and endorse you,\u201d Citro\u00ebn said. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t happen any other way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Step 2: Know what your brand is now and what you want it to become.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your current brand is what others think of you, not necessarily what you think of you, said Citro\u00ebn, author of \u201cYour Next Mission: A Personal Branding Guide for the Military-to-Civilian Transition\u201d and multiple LinkedIn Learning courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just like companies\u2019 brands can elicit memories of specific experiences with their employees or products, your brand leaves a lasting impression, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good or bad, you need to understand what that impression is, as well as what you\u2019d like it to be in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cKnowing where you\u2019re starting from and knowing where you want to end up are the two pillars that we put in personal brands,\u201d Citro\u00ebn said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Step 3: Market yourself.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Citro\u00ebn said body language matters, as do conversational skills \u2014 such as asking questions and not making everything about you \u2014 and being able to succinctly explain who you are and what makes you different, \u00e0 la step one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can take a big mental adjustment to be comfortable talking about yourself. While military members are taught a service-before-self type of mentality, \u201cthe civilian sector is very much about, \u2018What can you do for me?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019re not going to compete off of a resume. You\u2019re not going to compete off of an MOS you earned in the military,\u201d she said. \u201cThis is how civilians talk and how we get ahead and build relationships. It\u2019s all about how I feel about you, whether I trust you, whether I\u2019m going to refer you and put my name on the line. And that\u2019s how people get jobs and get their businesses funded.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s also important to know your audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you are fantastic, but you are speaking to the wrong people, it\u2019s not going to line up,\u201d Citro\u00ebn said. And likewise, if you\u2019re talking to a company that doesn\u2019t have the same values as you, then you aren\u2019t going to be happy working for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She offered a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lida360.com\/natcon\/\" target=_blank>list of practical steps<\/a> for marketing yourself, including projecting confidence, setting goals and staying real and authentic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Above all, consistency is key here, she said. People should have a consistent experience with you, whether they\u2019re meeting you in person or scrolling through your social media sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPersonal branding is not about perfection, because none of us are perfect.
