{"id":64536,"date":"2020-08-18T11:33:42","date_gmt":"2020-08-18T11:33:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/08\/18\/new-best-for-vets-employers-rankings-for-2020\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T13:52:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T13:52:28","slug":"new-best-for-vets-employers-rankings-for-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/education-transition\/2020\/08\/18\/new-best-for-vets-employers-rankings-for-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"New Best for Vets: Employers rankings for 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Military Times has unveiled the annual \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bestforvets2020.militarytimes.com\/\" target=_blank>Best for Vets: Employers<\/a>\u201d rankings for 2020, offering a comprehensive look at how companies nationwide have greatly expanded in recent years their support to recruit and retain former service members into the civilian job market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can find the<a href=\"https:\/\/bestforvets2020.militarytimes.com\/\" target=_blank> <b>list of this year\u2019s rankings here<\/b><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A total of 144 employers participated in this year\u2019s survey, which is the most prominent annual public rankings of its kind. Military Times conducted this year\u2019s survey in partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/scoutcommsusa.com\/\" target=_blank>ScoutComms<\/a>, a marketing and research firm focused on veterans and the military community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The firms responded to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/education-transition\/2020\/08\/18\/best-for-vets-employers-survey-methodology-how-we-did-it\/\" target=_blank>nearly 100 questions<\/a> detailing their policies and practice related to things like the recruitment and retention of veterans, support for the men and women who continue to serve in the reserve components, and efforts to foster a corporate culture that helps veterans to grow and succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere have been huge leaps-and-bounds improvements made by corporations,\u201d said Mike Bianchi, a retired Army officer who is now the senior director for education and career training for Syracuse University\u2019s Institute for Veterans and Military Families, also known as <a href=\"https:\/\/ivmf.syracuse.edu\/programs\/career-training\/employer-partners\/\" target=_blank>IVMF.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link smg-interstitial-link--fallback wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bestforvets2020.militarytimes.com\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__fallback-link\">Best for Vets: Employers rankings for 2020<\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, companies these days are more aggressively seeking out veterans at job fairs and recruiting through apprenticeships. \u201dThey are understanding that they have to meet the veteran talent where the veteran talent is and not waiting for the veteran talent to come to them,\u201d Bianchi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The success in recent years is evident in veterans unemployment figures, which have fallen steadily from their peak a decade ago. Even with this year\u2019s spike in joblessness due to the coronavirus, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/education-transition\/2020\/07\/02\/veterans-unemployment-saw-another-small-improvement-in-june\/\" target=_blank>unemployment among veterans<\/a> remains lower than among their civilian counterparts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent years, more companies are focused on not just hiring veterans but making sure the veterans who are hired succeed in the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not about a job. It\u2019s about a career. It\u2019s about fit,\u201d said Rosalinda Maury, who serves as IVMF\u2019s director of <a href=\"https:\/\/ivmf.syracuse.edu\/research-analytics\/\" target=_blank>research and analytics<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The companies at the top of this year\u2019s Military Times rankings \u2014 including Comcast NBCUniversal, the energy firm Southern Company and U.S. Bank \u2014 illustrate how employers across the U.S. private sector have implemented ways to improve how they seek and support veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, Comcast NBCUniversal has developed an internal e-book called the Military Community Roadmap that is distributed across the company. Southern Company offers structured training programs to help veterans translate the technical skills learned while in uniform into essential civilian credentials. And U.S. Bank provides retention support for a variety of veterans groups, including women and minority veterans. The bank also has programs to support military spouses, giving them special consideration for job transfer requests and paid leave if their spouse has to move to a new duty assignment or deploy overseas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A key factor in the success of many veterans individually and the reduction in veterans unemployment at large has been<a href=\"https:\/\/dodskillbridge.usalearning.gov\/\" target=_blank> training programs<\/a> offered by the Defense Department for outgoing service members as well as philanthropic groups that support them after separation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many cases, it\u2019s the cultural differences that can be the biggest barrier to success. Military career paths are typically very straightforward and linear, but veterans moving into the private sector have to understand that they\u2019ll have many more choices to make and alternative paths to consider for a career after the military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Training programs help veterans get past some military-style cultural instincts that can make job hunting difficult. For example, Bianchi said, many service members emphasize the word \u201cwe\u201d and are quick to ascribe their personal success to their team. Yet veterans looking for jobs must get comfortable with using \u201cI\u201d and promoting their own unique skills and achievements, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe use the term \u2018we,\u2019 \u2018us,\u2019 \u2018together,\u2019 as sort of a mantra in the military,\u201d Bianchi said. \u201cIt\u2019s one of the cultural things that we\u2019re trying to break down \u2014 the hesitancy to really accept credit and not say it was the team that did this, not me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But despite the progress, Bianchi warns of a potential \u201cveterans fatigue\u201d that has begun to take hold in recent years as the urgency of the post-9\/11 wars has faded in the minds of many Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf there is fatigue in assisting this population \u2014 given where we are today politically and all the other populations that are underserved \u2014 how do we sustain these efforts?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bianchi said he worries that public funding and philanthropic efforts supporting veterans transition may suffer without continued attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A retired Army lieutenant colonel, Bianchi noted that there\u2019s more at stake than simply lowering the unemployment numbers and finding jobs for one cohort of veterans. Successful transitions are key to sustaining the all-volunteer force and making sure that Americans continue to see examples of young people who come into the service, obtain skills and move on to find meaningful employment as civilians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a continuous cycle,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the coming years, many advocates hope that companies will better understand that veterans are not a monolithic group. The needs vary depending on whether veterans are former officers or enlisted service members, whether they are female or minority, or if they continue to serve in the reserves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat we are learning now is that the needs are not equal for all veterans,\u201d Maury said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are still underrepresented populations.
