{"id":64916,"date":"2019-02-20T16:35:11","date_gmt":"2019-02-20T16:35:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/02\/20\/wave-of-elderly-veterans-creates-financial-worries-for-vas-nursing-home-services\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:34:47","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:34:47","slug":"wave-of-elderly-veterans-creates-financial-worries-for-vas-nursing-home-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/veterans\/2019\/02\/20\/wave-of-elderly-veterans-creates-financial-worries-for-vas-nursing-home-services\/","title":{"rendered":"Wave of elderly veterans creates financial worries for VA\u2019s nursing home services"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 More than one million veterans will be eligible for taxpayer-funded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2018\/12\/14\/84-year-old-veteran-died-after-nursing-home-staff-ignored-his-infected-rotting-genitals\/\" target=\"_blank\">nursing home services<\/a> within the next five years, according to the latest estimates from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/2018\/09\/21\/trump-oks-the-largest-va-budget-ever\/\" target=\"_blank\">federal administrators trying to balance the costs<\/a> of institutional care with alternative options allowing those individuals to stay in their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Already, the annual costs of nursing home care have risen to almost $6 billion, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/2018\/12\/13\/va-hospitals-often-the-best-option-for-medical-care-study-finds\/\" target=_blank>Veterans Affairs officials<\/a> told lawmakers at a congressional hearing last week. By 2024, that number could top $10 billion, a significant portion of the department\u2019s overall budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs veterans age, approximately 80 percent will develop the need for some long-term services and support,\u201d Dr. Teresa Boyd, assistant deputy undersecretary for health at the Veterans Health Administration, told lawmakers. \u201cThe aging of the veteran population has been more rapid and represents a greater proportion of the VA patient population than in other healthcare systems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/01\/31\/new-va-health-care-rules-trump-overreach-or-more-choice-for-vets\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/RYW32DW23VCERNJQSYTDCRN7KA.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">New VA health care rules: Trump overreach or more choice for vets?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Debate over how to expand veterans health care choices connects to larger national fights over the role of government and private-sector partnerships.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By law, VA officials must provide nursing home care for veterans with service-connected disabilities rated 70 percent or more. The department currently maintains 156 state homes across all 50 states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But a study by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2018\/11\/14\/va-nursing-homes-ratings-patient-care-veterans-affairs\/1947406002\/\" target=\"_blank\"> USA Today and the Boston Globe last fall<\/a> found that about two-thirds of those facilities scored worse than private-sector nursing homes in a series of quality indicators last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And VA officials acknowledge that many veterans are seeking options to remain at their own homes or with family caregivers rather than enter the institutions, a shift in cultural preferences in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere&#8217;s an urgent need to accelerate the increase and the availability of the services since most veterans prefer to receive care at home,\u201d Boyd said. \u201cAnd VA can improve quality at a lower cost.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Scotte Hartonft, acting director of VA\u2019s Office of Geriatrics &amp; Extended Care, said programs like adult day care, home-based primary care and tele-health options have been extended significantly in recent years. Sanford Bishop, D-Ga. \u201cThey have the co-morbidities of post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury, palliative traumas.
