{"id":65901,"date":"2022-09-13T23:14:07","date_gmt":"2022-09-13T23:14:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/09\/13\/navy-secretary-to-rename-uss-chancellorsville-usns-maury\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:20:48","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:20:48","slug":"navy-secretary-to-rename-uss-chancellorsville-usns-maury","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/09\/13\/navy-secretary-to-rename-uss-chancellorsville-usns-maury\/","title":{"rendered":"Navy secretary to rename USS Chancellorsville, USNS Maury"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An independent commission tasked with compiling a list of Defense Department items <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/03\/30\/complete-list-of-military-items-named-for-confederacy-is-more-than-750-long\/\" target=\"_blank\">bearing the names of Confederate troops or sympathizers <\/a>is due to report its final <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2022\/08\/29\/commission-recommends-stripping-confederate-service-academy-honors\/\" target=\"_blank\">recommendations to Congress<\/a> by the end of the month, including the rebranding of two currently active Navy ships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cruiser Chancellorsville, memorializing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.historynet.com\/battle-of-chancellorsville\/\" target=\"_blank\">Confederate Civil War victory<\/a>, and the oceanographic survey ship Maury, named for a Confederate navy officer, should be renamed per Navy tradition, according to the commission, with new names coming at the discretion of Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe secretary of the Navy has almost always \u2026 been responsible for the naming of U.S. Navy ships, and we thought it was appropriate in this case as well,\u201d retired Army Brig. Gen. Ty Seidule, the commission\u2019s vice chair, told reporters Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision on the Navy ships was made early, Seidule said, in order to free up their limited time and budget to spend traveling around to Army posts to get input from soldiers, families and the local community about how to rename them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe felt, after going through this, that that was where we needed to put our focus and our energy,\u201d Seidule said, as some of the nine posts recommended for renaming had carried some of those names for more than 100 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/08\/09\/renaming-9-confederate-honoring-army-posts-will-cost-21m\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6598241.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Renaming 9 Confederate-honoring Army posts will cost $21M<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The name changes should be completed by early 2024.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was also a consideration that these posts are landmarks in their neighborhoods, while Navy ships are more transient, even shifting home ports from time to time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe secretary of the Navy routinely makes decisions on the names of ships, whereas the secretary of the Army, this is not something that they usually do,\u201d Seidule added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since kicking off in early 2021, the Naming Commission was given until the end of fiscal 2022 \u2015 Oct. 1 of this year \u2015 to compile a list of items to be changed, making recommendations for new names and what to do with removed artifacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"5122\" height=\"3659\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/171102-N-OH262-968.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-74493\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/171102-N-OH262-968.jpg.jpg 5122w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/171102-N-OH262-968.jpg.jpg?resize=300,214 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/171102-N-OH262-968.jpg.jpg?resize=768,549 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/171102-N-OH262-968.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,732 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/171102-N-OH262-968.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,1097 1536w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/171102-N-OH262-968.jpg.jpg?resize=2048,1463 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 5122px) 100vw, 5122px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Military Sealift Command\u2019s oceanographic survey ship USNS Maury will be renamed by the Navy secretary. (Bill Mesta\/Navy).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All told, according to commission member Lawrence Romo, the list topped out at 1,100 items, from posts and ships to monuments, building names and streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the monuments recommended for removal in part 3 of the report is a Confederate memorial at Arlington National Cemetery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe statue atop of the monument should be removed. All bronze elements on the monument should be deconstructed and removed, preferably leaving the granite base and foundation in place to minimize risk of inadvertent disturbance of graves,\u201d according to a Wednesday release, leaving the Army in charge of disposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The commission is also recommending that the Air Force rename Fort Fisher Recreation Area, at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina, as it was originally named for a Confederate installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The renaming effort was mandated by the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act, with a requirement to complete all rebranding by Jan. 1, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congress budgeted $2.3 million for the commission\u2019s time and efforts, according to the release, but the commission kept expenses down to a little over $600,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The commission estimates that the cost of removing monuments, changing signage and other renaming efforts will cost roughly $62 million.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A commission compiling a list of
