Col. Stuart Scheller was a star on the rise in the Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve seen an officer consistently in, as we say, the top three blocks of the Christmas tree,\u201d Marine Judge Col. Glen Hines, who oversaw Scheller\u2019s court-martial and also handed him a light sentence, said to the court Oct 15. \u201cHe was on a consistent upward path.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that Scheller is a civilian, kicked out of the Corps as part of a plea deal right before Christmas, he told Marine Corps Times in a phone interview that he plans to transform his calls for accountability into concrete action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, that will not mean running for political office in 2022, as many have speculated. Instead, he has teamed up with another Marine veteran \u2015 one who had been successful in the private sector \u2015 to run a coalition supporting more than two dozen candidates for federal office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think there needs to be leaders in Congress,\u201d Scheller told Marine Corps Times Dec. 26. \u201cRight now, we have a bunch of politicians, and I just don\u2019t think that\u2019s enough. They\u2019ve demonstrated that a lot of them don\u2019t have the courage that\u2019s required to be up there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dubbed the \u201cDisabled Veterans PAC\u201d and housed on his <a href=\"https:\/\/authenticamericans.com\/videos\/accountability-vr-us\/\" target=\"_blank\">website \u201cAuthentic Americans,\u201d<\/a> Scheller told Marine Corps Times that the PAC is supporting about, not yet publicly disclosed, twenty candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives and five candidates for the U.S. Senate.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/09\/03\/fired-marines-question-about-leader-accountability-should-not-be-dismissed\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"170\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6800017.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Fired Marine\u2019s question about leader accountability should not be dismissed<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">But let\u2019s not conflate Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller&#039;s story with the questions that he asked, which were not unreasonable, this retired Marine colonel writes.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the PAC is nonpartisan, Scheller says it currently is only supporting Republican candidates for office and that the effort is \u201cevolving.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Criteria for his PAC support includes that if elected, candidates will demand more accountability from military leadership and government; invite themselves to be held accountable for what they do in office; and will take substantive action while in office, rather than \u201cjust talk the talk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 90% of the Disabled Veterans PAC-supported candidates are veterans themselves, Scheller says. The remainder either have family in the military or have worked on veterans\u2019 issues and have been endorsed by veterans\u2019 organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is unclear to Marine Corps Times where the PAC money is coming from, and public documents aren\u2019t giving any clues this early on \u2015 though campaign contribution website OpenSecrets.com did show the PAC was in existence and had zero donations reported as of the site\u2019s last update on Oct. 18, 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of October 2021, controversial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/06\/01\/retired-seal-chief-eddie-gallagher-sues-navy-secretary-and-new-york-times\/\">former Navy SEAL Eddie Gallagher<\/a>\u2019s Pipe Hitter Foundation, which represented Scheller in court, helped raise more than $2.5 million on Scheller\u2019s behalf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That money, according to an email from Pipe Hitter Foundation, was used for legal defense, as well as what the organization described as \u201chardships.\u201d According to the Pipe Hitter Foundation, hardship funds were used strictly for \u201crent, mortgage payments, food, utilities, other such living expenses, medical care, childcare, and education.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scheller, whose political party affiliation wasn\u2019t available on public records, said, \u201cUltimately, I just want to put leaders that aren\u2019t extreme with their political views,\u201d adding that political moderates in the U.S. have more in common with each other than with ideological factions on the extreme left or right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultimately, Scheller says he wants to support those who \u201care willing to have moral courage stand for integrity, honesty, and go up to Washington to be a voice for change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only time will tell how the now well-known name and reputation of Scheller, who lost a small business and saw his wife leave him amid his intriguing few months in the spotlight, will fare in the civilian and political arena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>\u2018This was my die on a hill\u2019<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seeking accountability has been a consistent theme for Scheller since his first social media video went viral in late August 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scheller made that first video, in uniform, shortly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/12\/24\/outspoken-officer-who-publicly-demanded-accountability-discharged-from-the-marine-corps\/\" target=\"_blank\">after <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/12\/24\/outspoken-officer-who-publicly-demanded-accountability-discharged-from-the-marine-corps\/\" target=\"_blank\">13 U.S. service members<\/a>, including 11 Marines, a Navy corpsman and a soldier, were killed in an Aug. 26 complex attack centered around a suicide bomber outside the gates of Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A former infantry officer who fought in both Iraq and more recently Afghanistan, as the then lieutenant colonel battalion commander watched the haphazard withdrawal from Afghanistan culminate in the largest loss of U.S. lives there in nearly a decade, he thought speaking out was the right thing to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He did not plan to make other videos after the first one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy headspace was, \u2018This is it,\u2019\u201d Scheller told Marine Corps Times. \u201cThis was my die on a hill. I think that this is important enough that we have this conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the behest of his commanding officer, after that first video Scheller said he went home for the weekend, being told that the two of them would resume discussions about the video and pending investigation. Hours later, he received a phone call that informed him, without detail, that he had been relieved of command of the Advanced Infantry Training Battalion at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Marine Corps spokesman told Marine Corps Times at the time that the final withdrawal from Afghanistan was, \u201cobviously an emotional time for a lot of Marines, and we encourage anyone struggling right now to seek counseling or talk to a fellow Marine. There is a forum in which Marine leaders can address their disagreements with the chain of command, but it\u2019s not social media.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Scheller claims that even as his command referred him for a psychiatric evaluation, no one in his chain of command called to ask how he was, much less talk about what his future held or the content of his public statements. Scheller said this inaction drove him to take to social media with other videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/10\/15\/judge-blasts-command-gives-light-sentence-to-marine-who-demanded-accountability-on-social-media\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-15-at-11.16.04-AM.png.png?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">\u2018Accountability\u2019 Marine gets light sentence; judge blasts command<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The judge said the videos showed a man who appeared \u201cto be in pain,\u201d \u201cconfused\u201d and \u201csignificantly frustrated,\u201d rather than a rogue and potentially-violent Marine.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI just realized the Marine Corps didn\u2019t care about me, and no one was addressing the content of my statements,\u201d Scheller said. \u201cThat\u2019s when I made the second video. I was like, \u2018if you don\u2019t care about me, I don\u2019t care about you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following Scheller\u2019s second video on Aug. 29 the Marine Corps released another statement stating that the service was \u201caware\u201d of Scheller\u2019s second video and that \u201cthe Marine Corps is taking appropriate action to ensure the safety and well-being of Lt. Col. Scheller and his family. As this is a developing situation, we cannot comment further at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Subsequent videos and postings by Scheller ultimately had him placed \u2015 according to multiple outlets, Scheller, his parents, and his attorneys, but unconfirmed by the Marine Corps \u2015 under a \u201cgag order\u201d and then in military jail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Marine Corps declined to comment on the specific reason Scheller was put in confinement, both Scheller and his parents told Marine Corps Times that it was due to his presumed status as a \u201cflight risk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was coming into work every day,\u201d Scheller said. \u201cThat was a blatant lie.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though Hines stated during the trial that Scheller\u2019s confinement, coupled with leaks about his record ending up in the media, \u201craised the specter of unlawful command influence,\u201d the lieutenant colonel chose to plead guilty to all charges instead of fighting them in court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs a guy that\u2019s saying I demand accountability it seemed not congruent for me to try and beat the charges when I knew deep down that I had broken some of the rules,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Fresh eyes<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scheller hopes that the candidates supported by his PAC will bring both fresh eyes and accountability to Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A singular example of what this kind of accountability might look like is contained in the process of the roughly $770 billion 2022 National Defense Authorization Act recently signed by President Joe Biden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2022 NDAA includes $25 billion more than requested by the White House and is almost $40 billion more in spending than the previous record 2021 NDAA, despite the disastrous U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/12\/01\/confidence-in-military-continues-to-fall-after-afghanistan-withdrawal-survey\/#:~:text=Confidence%20in%20the%20military%20began,military%20since%20the%20survey%20began.\" target=\"_blank\">steep drop<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/12\/01\/confidence-in-military-continues-to-fall-after-afghanistan-withdrawal-survey\/#:~:text=Confidence%20in%20the%20military%20began,military%20since%20the%20survey%20began.\" target=\"_blank\"> in civilian confidence<\/a> in the military.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/newsletters\/daily-news-roundup\/2021\/10\/14\/marine-who-took-to-social-media-to-demand-accountability-pleads-guilty-to-all-charges\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/FBqPwtPXMAcONfN.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Marine who demanded \u2018accountability\u2019 via social media pleads guilty to all charges<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">His sentence was debated Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To Scheller, the NDAA would have been the perfect opportunity for Congressional leadership to demand accountability regarding Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNone of them tried to use the DoD budget, which was their one leverage of control,\u201d he said. \u201cNot one Congress member stood up and said, \u2018Hey, show us metrics of effectiveness. Show us accountability\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, Scheller said, Congress once again handed over a \u201cblank check\u201d to the Defense Department without the department demonstrating its effectiveness or owning accountability for results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the effectiveness of the Disabled Veterans PAC likely won\u2019t be able to be measured for years to come, the appetite among veterans for accountability regarding the last 20 years of war is high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In December 2021 a bipartisan group of veterans\u2019 organizations helped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/12\/17\/veterans-and-bi-partisan-group-of-lawmakers-look-forward-to-afghan-war-commission\/\" target=\"_blank\">secure the inclusion<\/a> of the Afghanistan War Commission in the 2022 NDAA. Although it will not produce results or actionable items for at least four years, the inclusion of the commission in the NDAA, according to Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America\u2019s Matt Zeller, is indicative of the latent political power of veterans and veterans\u2019 organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVeterans have never been more politically organized,\u201d Zeller told Marine Corps Times. \u201cSo I think if we don\u2019t use the opportunity we have now, then we will have squandered it, and shame on us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s an opportunity that Scheller is trying to capitalize on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI love the Marines. I\u2019ve got a lot of good friends still in the Marine Corps,\u201d Scheller said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUltimately, I want the military as a whole to be more effective. I want our foreign policy to be more effective.
